What is on my mind

I have a question.  Who is worth more, who deserves to be rich, who determines a person’s worth or value.  Why do some people have so much more than others do around him or her? I give just two examples and they are extreme but I hear so often that if you don’t have wealth that you don’t deserve it, you didn’t work hard enough. Well let me know your opinion because I don’t understand how the world works. Many would say I am just a naïve woman how could I know anything…it is over her head she just doesn’t get it there is a system and we few who know how to play the game we get “it” we deserve “it” all.

Person #1  If you have one man or woman who spent their time plus energy to learn a job that requires them to get up at 5am 6days a week working  doing back breaking  manual labor until the sun goes down with sweat rolling down their arms along with using their wits to solve multi layered problems that arise during the work day worth less, more or the same as…?

Person #2  Who maybe a Doctor, Lawyer or Business man or woman that gets to work by 8am working against the dilemmas’ thrown at him by the necessity of living in a Cosmopolitan area fighting alongside all the hordes of people that have all the problems that come with the daily commute.  Plus stress that goes along with many jobs that entail working closely and depending on the cooperation of many people working together to get your job done…?

Who gets to choose that your life is going to be made easy by having health insurance, food on the table, a roof over our heads, and then the luxuries of life? Some people say, “I worked for “my money” why should I give it away or share it with others if “they worked harder they would be richer” well that goes back to what YOU ARE WORTH. If you are overpaid for what you do then you are just giving back to society the money you were over paid. Why can’t more people think that way about money? Don’t we all deserve to fly “first class” rather than being shoved into cramped boxes… next time, you fly just turn around and see how many other people are uncomfortable!  We all deserve- a  “healthylife, “honorable” liberty, and the pursuit of “equal” happiness.

After two days at the Grand Canyon, we moved onto Zion National Park, which was as breath taking as the Grand Canyon but just not as huge. The rocks and their colors are etched into my memory forever but I am delighted that I was able to capture so many pictures. The video is from the Emerald Pools the lower pools path

One day of a delightful vacation

It is the 23rd of September and I sitting in the lodge just off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is very difficult to give a description of the Canyon you just have to see it in person, so many people me included looked at pictures and movies of this  Wonder of the World but it doesn't do it justice but I have included a video of my own.

The Flood of 2011

I uploaded some News clip of the flooded area. Most of the video is of Montoursville although there was wide spread damage to all the areas around Williamsport. Areas that have never been hit in living memory were affected. I was awakened by a rescue helicopter right outside my window. Gary was home yesterday from work and stayed up all night the water just did not stop. Luckily Gary thought about calling a plumber, they were able to bring a second pump to help bring the water level down. The road in the last frame is the road to Eders.

I don’t cook breakfast for my family every morning; however, when I cook breakfast, which is brunch due to my late rising I make an unbelievable homemade French toast. I use a recipe first perfected at Balthazar’s in New York City. My cooking and baking skills are superb, some may say that my palette is narrow which may be true, but I believe that I can cook or bake anything. When I am given the recipe and with the assurance that I would not have to eat what I cooked.
I don’t run marathons or climb mountains however; I have in the past done what needed to be done. While working as a RN I accompanied a patient that needed to be E-VACED riding in a “very old helicopter,” then as a civilian I attempted to rescue a climber on the top of a steep mountain cliff unfortunately the man had fallen to his death.
I don’t run a business but I have set up a Medical Clinic in my hometown that will care for thousands- myself and another RN started with “nothing” except a space, some basic equipment and a Benefactress dream of opening a Clinic for the “poor”.
Because of my Chronic Pain, many people view me as flawed but I have always been a “go getter.” As young as 12 I was volunteering as a Candy Striper this led me to a job in the same hospital working in the Physical Therapy department. My job entailed doing treatments to being a patient porter. This was followed by working in X-ray, and then the Operating Room, I supplemented my income with Baby-Sitting in my Neighborhood. Nursing School, work, Marriage, and children followed with many adventures sprinkled in, I have supported my Husband, my Children and my family through the years. I take great offence to people around me that have forgotten that I have achieved a GREAT deal in my life. The few examples that I have given may seem dramatic. I don’t look for extreme or dangerous risk however; I do what I need to do.
I have written this as much for myself because I tend to get very depressed due to the difficulty I have with mobility I need to remember my active years and that I still have fight with a lust for life inside myself.
My father always said, “The day after you die the world goes on without you and life is no bed of roses”. I need to enjoy each day no matter what is thrown my way.
And to those how don’t appreciate me WAKE UP!

"Flash Mobs"

The disparity between the “Haves and Have-nots” in the United States as well as the major countries around the world is alarming. We see the “people’s reaction to this condition being played out on the streets of London England this past week. The disproportion of wealth and the inequality of living standards can be felt on the streets of this Country. If leaders of this United States feel that the unrest-taking place in France, England and many other areas of our World will not jump across the pond to our shores, well they are sadly mistaken. A Texas teacher interviewed this past week on ABC News stated, “The cost of low taxes- realize that your child will be in a classroom that will have a larger number of students, and your child will have less individual attention so everything comes at a price”. We as a Nation need to care for each other, including for the less fortunate of our Country- if we don’t there will be unrest. We can see the need starting to show through the cracks, there are “flash Mobs” causing mayhem in Philadelphia and Milwaukee. The “flash Mobs” are being blamed on delinquent kids but I wonder what the real underlying causes could be.

I hate the heat

I hate the HEAT, summer always comes with heat, humidity, and sweat how I hate summer weather. My problem is the heat not the season. I would love to go out to be with all the other people enjoying this season. There are county fairs, baseball games, swimming, and so much more that I would love to do but the damn heat comes along for the ride. It is so frustrating to see others out welcoming this season with open arms, they will morn this loss but I just sit inside watching the months go by.

Looking for the Milky Way

Gary and I fulfilled a dream of mine by going to Galeton, PA to see the Milky Way. Yes the Milky Way is always there but only seen in certain areas of the world now. That is sad isn't it.
The Milky Way was not as brilliant as I would have liked however, I was able to view one of the most spectacular sights known to man. Two thirds of this country has light pollution, which precludes people from seeing the stars as we did as children, this I feel is very unfortunate. To lie on a blanket in your back yard during the summer looking up and counting stars should be every child’s rite of passage. There are places in the country that for whatever reason have escaped light pollution and Galeton is one of them. It was a landing strip in the 1940’s which is now used by amateur astronomers and stargazers.
“There are telescopes, guest lecturers, camaraderie, astronomy equipment vendors, and an evening of public stargazing.”
I did have a camera class at the "Dark Room" which was very taxing- it was very, very HOT prior to getting on the road for Cherry Spring Park!
Our trip to the landing site was as Brian says, "a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride". This area was way, way off the beaten path; we got way off roading- we ended at the end of a path. We went off the black top to a stone covered road to two dirt ruts with grass growing down the middle so we turned around and took the left that got us to our destination.

My time with Brian in Philly

I went to visit Brian and stay with him in his apartment in Philadelphia from June 4th to the 8th. Brian had many delightful day trips planned- we went to a movie - it dealt with prehistoric caves, we spent some time in Rittenhouse Park exploring how to best take photographs, we walked around the Philadelphia area. We went out for lunch and dinner.
Brian had something planned every day for us to do. We went to a fabric museum. We dropped off supplies at his school we took things to get printed I had a picture printed. We spent time watching Big Bang theory on DVD and we had many hours to ourselves.

Brian's Orientation Shirt

I found out from Brian today that he was selected by PAFfA or should I say his drawing was selected to be the orientation T-shirt for this years orientation class, everyone that comes to school receives the T-shirt and it will be Brian's design. The T-shirt that had been used for the last two years was an older design so it was wonderful to see that Brian was selected for this wonderful honor. His T-shirt design could be used by several classes only time will tell. I did get a picture of the design, enjoy!

A Great Night in New York

So many things have happened since my last Blog. Gary and I took a trip to New York City a fraternity brother of Gary's was able to get us tickets to a play entitled Knute Rockne it was on Broadway. The theater seating was “in the round” our seats were in the second row it felt as if we were on the stage with the actors. Gary had picked a restaurant for an early dinner which turned out to be just a walk-through from the theater. We parked right at the theater so the evening could not have been better planned. We had a delicious Italian meal after dinner we made our way to the play. After the play we were able to meet the actors then by chance the director and producer. Dan Lauria the lead in the play (he also played the Father in “The Wonder Year- long running TV show) met up with Gary’s frat brother; they were in the military together. After the show everyone walked down to an after play Irish Tavern where many of the cast sang it was great fun.

News Story About Depression

REUTERS

"Genetic Link To Depression

Scientists say they have discovered the first solid evidence that variations in some peoples' genes may cause depression -- one of the world's most common and costly mental illnesses.

And in a rare occurrence in genetic research, a British-led international team's finding of a DNA region linked to depression has been replicated by another team from the United States who were studying an entirely separate group of people.

"What's remarkable is that both groups found exactly the same region in two separate studies," Pamela Madden, who led the U.S. team at Washington University, said in a statement.

The researchers said they hoped the findings would bring scientists closer to developing more effective treatments for patients with depression, since currently available medicines for depression only work in around half of patients.

"These findings ... will help us track down specific genes that are altered in people with this disease," said Gerome Breen of King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, who led the other research group.

The researchers said they believed many genes were involved in depression

These findings are unlikely to benefit patients immediately, with any new drugs developed from them likely to take another 10 to 15 years. However, they will help scientists understand what may be happening at the genetic and molecular levels in people with depression.

The first study analyzed more 800 families with recurrent depression, while the second examined depression and heavy smoking in a series of families from Australia and Finland.

Both studies were published in the American Journal of Psychiatry on Monday and both teams reported a strong link between depression and genetic variations in a region called chromosome 3p25-26.

"Normally in genetic studies of depression, replication of findings is very difficult and frequently takes years to emerge, if ever," said Breen, who gave a briefing in London about the work.

Major depression affects about 20 percent of people at some point in their lives. Severe and recurring depression affects up to 4 percent of people and is notoriously hard to treat.

The World Health Organization has forecast that depression will rival heart disease as the health disorder with the highest disease burden in the world by 2020.

According to a 2006 study, depression is responsible for 100 million lost working days a year in England and Wales alone at a cost of 9 billion pounds ($14.6 billion).

Studies of families with depression have indicated that the disorder has a genetic link and scientists think around 40 percent of the risk of developing it is contributed by genes, with the rest down to environmental and other external factors.

"We are just beginning to make our way through the maze of influences on depression and this is an important step toward understanding what may be happening at the genetic and molecular levels," Michele Pergadia, who worked on Washington University study, said in a statement about the findings.

Breen's team is now conducting detailed gene sequencing studies in 40 of the families involved in the first study to try to find specific genes and variations that show a link.

An interesting Spies tale

An article from the New York Times sent to me by my Mother-in-Law Madeline Spies a story from the SPIES side of the family... enjoy the read

"CHANGED HIS MIND AT THE GATE

"Inventor Peter Spies was to have sought reconciliation with his wife at the hour of noon.

Special to the New York Times
Mount Vernon New York December 6. It was noon by the village clock when Peter Spies, finishes his drink, banging his heavy mug down on the little table in the bar of the Railroad House on Railroad Street and turning to Christopher Ream, the Tavern keeper said:
“At noon you know, Chris my wife is to give me her final decision. I have told her I would call her at that time, and I must be off.”
“Luck to ye”, shouted Ream as Spies buttoned his overcoat and walked out.
Spies turned into Oaks Street and walked slowly up the hill.
In front of No. 61 the home of his wife, into which he was seeking readmission, he stopped and stood thoughtfully for a minute or two. Then he continued his walk up the hill to railroad station and went back to New York.
Since Friday of last week Spies has been calling almost daily, asking his wife to take him back into his home and her affections. She has steadfastly refused to do so, and on Thursday he told her he would call at noon today for the last time, if she did not accept him then.
Mrs. Spies a good-looking German woman and mother of eleven children eight of whom are living, says her husband, after eighteen years of marriage has not been true to her. Spies who is about forty years old is an electrician and an inventor.
Eighteen months ago he went to England to sell a patent arc light he had perfected. He remained there so long Mrs. Spies said yesterday that Mr. Paul Miller an old friend of the family went to England to try and persuade him to return to his wife and children. Spies promised to do so. “I'll take a fast steamer” Mrs. Spies said her husband told Miller and will get to New York before you do.
So Miller came back third-class. Spies was not at home then nor did he come, and a month later, on October 11 the wife leaving Miller in charge of the house and children except the baby sailed to join him. She said she did not find things there to her liking and tried to induce your husband to return with her.
Instead she said he disappeared and she returned you New York. Being without her husband’s support and with winter in front of her she planned to take in a few boarders.
To Paul Miller, a friend who had aided her she gave a suit of her husband's clothes, she having brought his trunks back from Liverpool with her. Miller became one of several boarders. Then a week ago yesterday Spies appeared, and finding the border there with his clothes on accused him of larceny, but Miller was discharged when arraigned in court. For this time Spies had tried to persuade his wife that he desired to return, that he loved her still.
“I told him”, said Mrs. Spies, “that he may have a room of his own in the house if you would provide for the children but he wouldn't room by himself, and I knew he did not love me and, in fact, he loved another and so would not consent
He came day after day but I told him I would not take him back. Then he said he would come for my answer today at noon.
“Yes I was here I told him it would be no use but just the same I did not go out of the house from 10:30 until 2, and he didn't come. My little boy said he saw his papa he was standing at the gate but he didn't come in.
“What would I have told him just what I told him? Just what I told him before I want him to provide for his children he ought to put $10,000 of the $75,000 he got for his invention in the bank for them, so they could have an education. I'm going to keep boarders and Frederick my oldest son who is 16 years old is going to work in a bakery Monday I guess will get along all right.
“Yes I do love him yet,”
Mrs. Spies’ says she does not care for a separation but just wants her husband to provide for the children."

Osama bin Laden is dead

It was late Sunday night, Gary and I had been watching videos of old shows I had taped so we did not see the LIVE television until after Gary went upstairs to get ready for bed. Then all of a sudden a banner came across a new break: Osama bin Laden is dead. What a rush it has been such a long time – it has been since 9/11 when we witnessed the destruction he planned for our country. I called up to Gary, “Osama bin Laden is dead, turn on the television. I didn’t know how to think or feel. You don’t want to be happy when someone is killed but he is the “mastermind” of one of the worst attacks on our, my country. You want to jump up and down, shoot guns, scream and holler but alas we are a civilized people so we or at least I could never rejoice in the death of anyone.
Another story that has me very upset appeared on 60 Minutes last night- The Lara Logan story
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/04/28/60minutes/main20058368.shtml?tag=contentMain;cbsCarousel

(CBS News)
"The night of Feb. 11, the Egyptian dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak was falling. More than 100,000 people filled Cairo's Tahrir Square in wild celebration. Among those in the crowd was our "60 Minutes" colleague, correspondent Lara Logan.
Lara, a native of South Africa, is an experienced war reporter, but Tahrir Square became her most hazardous assignment.
During the revolution, dozens of reporters were assaulted, often by agents of the regime. On the night of the 11th, a mob turned on Lara and her "60 Minutes" team and singled her out in a violent sexual assault…"

Four Years- Mom

I'm writing this blog on April 19th which is several days after when I should have posted. I waited to post because April 16th is a very difficult day for me. We are coming well, to an anniversary, it has been four years since Mother died even saying the words seem unreal it's hard to believe that she has been dead for four years it seems like it's been a life time. Although it also feels that she just hugged me and walked out the door. The last memorable day Mom and I had together was when we went out for a ride. As a rememberance I spent last Friday driving out to Eders getting ice cream that had been the last thing I was able to do with Mom before she became confined to bed. We had gone out on a beautiful sunny spring day to Eders and she ordered strawberry ice cream despite all her protest of I can't eat it I'll never finish it or I'm not hungry she was able to eat every bite of the ice cream.
We had a wonderful drive in the country after that day she became very ill and needed to be in a hospital bed. I didn't want this time of year to go by without mentioning that I miss you Mom more than I can express and that I love you!

Brian Birthday 2011

Today is March 17th St. Patrick's Day and is celebrated around the world at least for drinking but it's also the day that Brian was born. That day 32 years ago was a beautiful sunny one at about 6:30 in the morning I woke up was in the hospital by 8:30am and Brian was born at about 20 minutes after one. I could hear a woman screaming down the hall, I was doing fine until right before Brian was delivered the pain got very intense. At that point I grabbed Gary taking his T shirt pulling his chest and saying “what am I to do now I can't take it anymore”-shortly after that I was taken into the birthing room. I didn't know there were people out waiting in the hall my cousin named Birdie pushed her way into the front with my Mom (unmarried and wanted her own child desperately) she worked in the hospital so she was one of the first relatives to see Brian. My Mother waited IMMEDIATELY outside the delivery room doors along with my cousin so when I was moved from the birthing room to my post-partum room she opened the door and was able to see Brian before anyone.
I also had a friend that was a Sister of Christian Charity, we worked together in ICU she had dreamt my baby would be first a boy (this was before you could know the sex of the baby) and born with red hair, freckles just like Tom Sawyer. Brian was born with red hair and freckles. My Mother also had a dream that Brian would be born then jump out of his crib doing somersaults down the hall. Although he did not jump out of the bed he was always a very active child he walked before he was ready to walk and found himself with many cut lips. Gary's Mom and Dad came in from the East my Father was in the west of Pennsylvania he hurried home everyone was very happy. Brian is the first grandchild on my side of the family.
It would be the first of two of the most exciting days of my life the first day was when Brian was born and second would be the day Jenni was born.
My mother had a story first you have to know that Mom was 100% Irish her grandmother came over at the age of 16 from Ireland on the boat. Mom thought she was making up stories to embellish her Irishness stating that she was born on St. Patrick's Day. My mother never believed that story “it must be some Irish blarney how could anyone really be born on St. Patrick's Day” she had to eat her words and my Great-Great Grandmother is probably laughing somewhere because there is a child born every day even on St. Patrick’s day!
I want to wish Brian a very happy birthday today!

Protest in WI - Dad had a poor week

Jenni's job situation is in jeopardy and the National news picked up the story. She does not want to give up all her bargaining power. The increase in health & pension cost is not the problem if they would increase her salary but to give up everything to get nothing back.
Dad had a bad week he decided to stop taking his Lasix medication so his leg swelled up, the scabs on his head became infected and Carl checked on Dad finding he had a temperature. Dad always ask for Advil (Ibuprofen) but HE CAN NOT TAKE IT because he is on COUMADIN- he has Tylenol at the apartment. I will be following him this weekend because Carl is visiting Liz for the weekend.

IBM vs MAN

Here comes the computer... on February 14th through the 16th Watson the IBM computer will be playing two of Jeopardy's best contestants for a match MAN against the MACHINE! This will be the first time a computer will play, it is unbelievable to realize that the programming is to a level on pare with a human. It is truly frigtening to watch a machine answering questions... a person has 3 seconds to hear the question, hit the buzzer and answer correctly so to see a machine do that is like a man landing on the moon! I hope people watch. This clip is a practice match.

Brian's School

Brian brought this News cast to my attention. PAFA, his school is doing some re-purposing of the school spaces. They are adding a cafe and closing off a space immediately outside the school as an extended outdoor lounge area with a sculpture as it's center piece. The very large sculpture is of a paint brush with a blob of paint and I look forward to it's completion. The shovels mentioned in the piece included one done by Brian- it is difficult to see but he was delighted to add his artistic flare to the project!

Egypt Erupts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The last time I saw a Country erupt was Tiananmen Square unfortunately the change came to China at a different rate… I started this Blog several days ago and since I began the riots in Egypt have turned very violent. The march started out all “hearts and flowers” – a group of people PEACEFULLY demonstrating they wanted change in their country. Now on the 6th day the people of Egypt are calling for the head of their country to step down after 30 years, he has been a greedy dictator and he must step down. Tomorrow, Friday the people are calling for a ‘day on reckoning” - Hosni Mubarak must resign!

Dad fell

An update from Mary Ann about Dad-
"FYI, dad fell this morning getting up to go to the bathroom. He laid on the floor for almost 3 hours before he was able to get ahold of someone. He has brush burns on his forehead, knees and elbows from squiming around on the bedroom floor trying to get himself up. He had his cell phone but couldn't see to dial the numbers. Finally he got ahold of Carl and Carl was able to go and get him up, showered and fed. I went up this afternoon and cleaned up the blood in the carpet, got his groceries and something to eat for dinner. Carl was going to check on him tonight. I did talk to dad about getting the life alert thing we had for mom. I really feel we need to insist that he do this and I don't think he'll give us much grief because I think he was scared about what happened today. Anyway, don't mean to rain on your fun time with Jenni but wanted to let you know. He sees his PCP on Tues so he can get checked out for any injuries. We can look into the life alert thing next week.Enjoy the warm weather- its friggin cold up here."

Our Susquehanna River

I want to share this info with everyone it deals with the local "OIL COMPANIES" dumping into the river we just paid to have cleaned. We each person in Loyalsock paid 3,000 to 6,000 dollars for the water coming out of our house to not be dumped into the river but this does not apply to the 'OIL COMPANY" read the article please:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110103/ap_on_he_me/us_gas_drilling_frackwater
Pa. allows dumping of tainted waters from gas boom
By DAVID B. CARUSO, Associated Press David B. Caruso, Associated Press – Mon Jan 3, 6:30 pm ET
The natural gas boom gripping parts of the U.S. has a nasty byproduct: wastewater so salty, and so polluted with metals like barium and strontium, that most states require drillers to get rid of the stuff by injecting it down shafts thousands of feet deep.....
