Our Father Time

Old father time is taking a nap to get ready for another year. Liz is home from Egypt, James is in Florence with no luggage... there is a rumor that their luggage may make an appearance today... we can all hope. Everyone seems to be getting back to the day to day routine of everyday. Brian worked on a picture of the Funeral Home showing off the Christmas decorations... it is quite beautiful. The pictures and the job the boys (as Mom would say) have done is a delight to behold. I am still catching up on my sleep- this season was exhausting.
good reason NOT to go to INDIA

Liz called

Liz called today from Aswan - an Island which she stayed and could only leave by boat. She is very anxious to leave Egypt and to come to rest in her bed in her own home. The kids would run around chasing her, wanting to kiss her hand because she has such white skin. The men continue to make garish remarks, "don't you feel cold" trying to get Liz to cover up. Then there are people begging them to buy things all the time. Jenni is home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin around 12 hour driving. Now we gear up for New Years then we start all over again with a new beginning. I do look forward to getting more sun light, I hate the darkness. Does anyone have any News Year Resolution, if you do I would love to hear them.
I do have one story that was brought to my attention when I asked for "a story's about a favorite Christmas or Birthday gift".
James reminded me of the Birthday when he had everything "Maple" he had pancakes with maple syrup, then a maple flavored cake with maple flavored frosting. Just thinking about it makes me get a sugar rush- it was a birthday that I will always remember and so does James.

After the ....

Liz has written again- "Sorry I haven't been in contact in a few days, Luxor hotel had no internet access at all and the internet cafes in town were so slow that I couldn't even log on. We are in Aswan now arrived last night, the hotel is on it's own island so the only access on a off is by boat. So now can say that there isn't a mode of transportation that I haven't used. We are here until tomorrow then fly back to Cairo and get the plane back the next morning so I will be talking to you soon." I am glad to hear Liz is well... the places she talks about it sound so exotic and old world...yes I know they are thousands of years old but it just seems "fantastic".
We are home from our travels and we had a wonderful holiday with all of our families.

In Philadelphia

I am celebrating Christmas with my NJ family in Philadelphia... we are overnighting in a Holiday Inn Express and will be heading home to Williamsport tomorrow. Jenni.... boohoo is going home on Sunday Morning. No news from Liz, she is to be in Luxor last I knew. James dropped me a line and said they are doing OK but THEIR LUGGAGE WAS LOST. Can you image, James you will have to find clothes with no Logos in Italy (do they even make any clothes without logos in Italy). They are in Rome and doing well.... hope they find their luggage soon. I will let people know when I hear anything. I am feeling very stressed from the physical work I have been doing. I will sleep or at least doze all of January!

A Christmas Message

Merry Christmas Eve

A message from Liz

Merry Xmas Eve!!!

Just got back from the day trip to Alexandria, I don't know how many times it will take me to learn not to take a road trip in a third world country. We left at 8 am this morning and just got back, traffic was a nightmare. Other than that we leave for Luxor tomorrow morning. I tried to call Dad today on that crazy phone of mine, I got through but he couldn't hear me, I could hear him though. So tell him it was me this morning trying to wish him a Merry Xmas. Now the phone doesn't work again so I think i will give up on that.Have a great time tonight, I miss you all and will write when I get to Luxor.
Brian has a beautiful picture of a Cardinal, my favorite bird because of the red so check it out

December 23th

It is the 23 of December, Jenni and brain are out visiting Gary’s work, it is 8 degrees outside, there is snow on the ground. It seems Christmas holiday has started because it is quiet outside. We are having pizza tonight- Grandad is coming for dinner if the weather stays drivable. The house is full of decorations and presents. Liz is in Cairo, here are some emails she sent me… “Hi, I am in Cairo now, we arrived last night. I still can't get the damn phone to work and I don't want to waste any time more time on it, so I guess you will have to wait to hear my lovely voice until I get back. Tell Dad the story.
We arrived late last night, what a trip over here, I was exhausted and kept saying to myself that I will never do this again. But today we went to see the pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx, it was amazing. I think I am just going to hang around here tonight do get some rest. This is a very old city and polluted but not as bad as India. All the little Egyptian kids touring groups following us around and saying Hi and giggling, they are cute.
I will try to send an e-mail update every couple of days. Lots of xmas here at the hotel, big xmas tree and 24x7 xmas music, strange.
… I hope all of you are enjoying the holidays, I will catch up with you soon,…..
We are getting along well, there were some strong windstorms today so very sandy. Tomorrow we are going to Alexandria on a tour for the whole day. Glad to get out of the city, not very nice here, just a step above Delhi. The men are very aggressive and say things to that we don't understand, I'm sure sexual.’

Liz is on her way

Liz made it to Heathrow Airport and then into the air to Cairo as far as I have heard. Her network at home broke the night before she was to leave so she was not able to print out her boarding pass. She spent 2 and 1/2 hours waiting to just get to the first counter. Liz told me she hates British Airways... she was to arrive in Cairo by Sunday 5 pm. I will put a note on the blog when I hear anything from Liz.

Decorating the House

Christmas is coming... Jenni is on the road home- a 12 hour trip to boot. Well we are busy decorating the house, it wore me out this year. If Brian is away and can't get home to help next year we will just have to put up less decorations. I still have cookies to make. Liz will be on her way to Egypt tonight... she has a blackberry so she will be able to keep in touch with us.

An old doll make new

I hope you enjoy this fireplace... you can set it to play in a loop and it is like you have your own fireplace... enjoy the sight and sound of winter!
Mom told me about a Christmas when things were leaner than usual for the McKernan family… Nanny took an old doll of Mom’s and used some of her own hair to redo the dolls curls along with sewing new clothes out of old scraps of cloth to dress the doll up and gave it to Mom so she would have a present for Christmas. Mom told me the story when I was young and recanted the story later in life but I have heard enough stories to know that Christmas was not a happy time for Mom. We might not have gotten everything we wanted but we never WANTED FOR ANYTHING.

Fievel

Jenni called me with a Christmas story today. It took place the year when the movie “Fievel -AN AMERICAN TALE” was popular. The main character, Fievel was sold at Sears and Jenni begged for Fievel until Christmas morning. She remembers coming down in the morning and the first present she spied was a big clumsily rapped package with a bow on top, she ripped it open and yelled its Fievel… I love my Fievel. A very special place was reserved for Fievel, it was the only toy Jenni sleep with until on another Christmas morning “Jesse” showed up- Jesse was a Cabbage Patch Doll with horn rim glasses and was able to hold a crayon. Jesse and Fievel were Jenni’s favorites for many years to come. My memory of Jesse was- that I went down to the mall to purchase Jesse when I was on bed rest from a surgery on my neck several weeks before. The rest of the family went to NJ without me. Gary still reminds me that I was to be on bed rest but if I hadn’t bought Jesse, Jenni could have been scarred for life. Just kidding, Jenni did love her dolls

How things change

It is midnight and I am watching "The Bishops Wife" the old b&w version with Carey Grant... I looked at the clothes the people were wearing and it made me laugh. The women wore a plastic type boots… it reminded me of the boots Mom wore. They came to just above the ankle, they wore them over your shoes, a tab, and a button hooked over to keep the water out. The women must have frozen, the boots had no lining, and they never wore anything but dresses with stockings. Women didn’t wear tights or leggings, I remember one Christmas years later I was getting my first knee high boots and Mom wanted to know if they fit. Therefore, I went into their room, sat in the green leather wingback chair, and closed my eyes as Mom put the boots on- it was so silly but Mom loved to surprise us. It worked I loved the boots. Liz conveyed a story of when she was very little, it was Christmas Eve… Carl and James decided to tell her that they could hear Santa and his Reindeer on the roof and she had to go to bed, she believed every word and was delighted that she actually caught Santa on her roof. The boys thought it was a joke but the last laugh was on them because it has been a wonderful memory for years.
Gary was 11 years old and it was Christmas morning. He woke up and was directed by his parents to stay upstairs until everyone was ready. His father was at the bottom of the steps getting ready with his 8mm film camera, the camera came with large floodlight type bulbs mounted on the top of the camera; they impaired their vision for hours. He came into the room and discovered a flexible flyer sled hidden behind the couch. He spent many happy hours flying down hills around his house.
I have put out a request for stories of Christmas or Birthdays that were special... I remind everyone that I am still waiting for some of you.

Finally my train is here

The Christmas count down is coming quickly so here is a little taste of my decorations. Watch out for the speeding train. It looks like it is moving quickly but in reality it hardly moves but ... I just got an idea I will film it and but the real thing in action so just wait until you see it in real time!
I have reported that Gary was having a MRI or something like that... we have to wait to see the Neurologist for the head results but Gary has a small stone in his ureter and we have to wait until he passes it. So if you hear a loud YELL from central Pa you will know that he passed his stone.

Brian's back is better today so he just has to take it easy.

I have wanted to do this for the past 8 years. I don't know why the man was mad but President Bush makes everyone so mad... I think that he does what we all would love to do... what the hell are you doing Mr President?

Getting ready for Christmas

I talked with Liz today and in January she is to go to San Diego for training. All I can say is that I have been watching the bad weather up and down the East coast and I am really worried for Liz but time will tell. Liz leave on the 20th for Egypt... that must be so exciting. I just don't have the energy to go and do anything myself. I have been getting ready for the holidays, all 3 Spies did decorating from dawn to late in the evening. I finally found a 20" round train set that fits on the front room table with Brian we are getting it ready to be revealed... I will put it on the Blog when it is ready. I shot video of the fireplace and I am editing it and that also will make an appearance on the blog. I was out shopping and for 2 weeks before Christmas it didn't seem very crowded. Well I will continue to keep you informed.

The News Fit to Pass On

The governor of Illinois has been trying to sell the Senate seat, we have a plan to bailout the automakers with 14 billion dollars, protestors in Greece are rioting because of political scandals, a cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe has claimed 776 dead with many more injured, the people of this country are sick and tired of big wigs trying to claim the bailout money for themselves and this news is just the headlines. Jenni’s trivia team WON again, receiving the highest score for themselves ever-43 out of 45 correct. The people running the Trivia contest are going to bring in some "heavy hitters" to beat her team because they always win! Also, Jenni won her trial today. The people in the court said that her POWER POINT presentation was as well done, as any “high price” firm would present. Hoorah for Jenni. Brian through his back out again so he is one bed rest for two days and it is driving him crazy. They may want to operate which is the last thing he wants so everyone put good vibes out into the universe for Brian back to get better.- thanks

News

No much happening, Gary had a CAT scan to see why red blood cells in urine probably nothing but better to be safe. We when out to get Christmas tree because the temperature became more tolerable to go outside- it seems like a short one but we will have to wait and see. I video taped the fireplace so I can have a DVD so.... I can watch it without making a fire. Brian put in his Yale application... another just have to wait and see thing to do. Jenni has been very busy with a trial, she picked a jury yesterday, not heard from her today. Liz got a Blackberry so if any problems in Egypt she can call home (I am very happy about that). The NYT stock is now so low- the economy is so depressing... then we have the Governor of Illinois is trying to sell the seat vacated by Obama to the highest bidder, I am afraid to listen to any news.

Just for Laughs

I go around the net and find what I think are funny... how could a Dragon Holding a Crystal not be funny well, I laughed!

Sad News

Time goes so fast, Liz was telling me that Leslie Lessig has breast cancer and that reminds me that Laurie Spies had breast cancer and survived it -she was in her early thirties. People come into our life and their passing marks, at least for me a place in my heart. It is hard to comprehend that Uncle Jerome was only is his fifties when he died and now I am in my fifties. Jerome caused his own death by drinking and not seeking help. When you have a disease thrust upon you, meaning that you have to check up and live a healthy life then you can’t be angry at the results. Some people even eat inappropriately like my dad and get away with it, he is lucky. I know that I didn’t want to have a colonoscopy because Mom had one and she died of something else but they found four polyps and they removed them so maybe just maybe it saved me from colon cancer. Taking care of yourself isn’t fun but if you can have a simple test or change something in your diet, I stopped taking Premarin, or medication maybe I won’t die of what killed Mom- ovarian cancer.

Went to Johnstown

Went to Johnstown, waited in a new uncomfortable office. Got my shot, long ride home-arm hurts, going to rest.

On the road again

Finally after many days of waiting the Thanksgiving video is ready to be seen. Hope everyone enjoys it. On another note lets put a good vibe out in the universe for Liz... At&t does not look good because of all the lay-offs and because they have Liz training to climb the poles (no joking) so think good thoughts. Dad came over for a homemade dinner.... bread (not knead bread), lasagna, & delicious chocolate-chocolate cake...ummm. Gary and I are off to Johnstown on Friday. I met the new Dentist today ... have 3 minor cavities (damn drugs dry my mouth).

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Not much new

Working on my video and relaxing... going to the Dentist tomorrow, lucky me.

Three cheers for Jenni today... first she made a Buche de Noel, it was her first attempt and it seems that it was a success, second- her team the "Juicy Fruits" won again and they all had a delightful feast on their winning from last week's tournament. Onto Brian... he picked his studio today... he was told that it will be finished soon, when it is I will post a pictures.
I am hoping to invite Grand-dad down for homemade Lasagna tomorrow.
I went to Macy's yesterday and purchased something... I talked with the sales clerk about coupons and sales.... told her I was willing to come back down to get the best deal- it was discussed not just once but many times over the entire conversation, it was a small item and she reassured me I was getting the best deal. But I came home and the flyer said later in the week the item would be 40% off not the 30% that I got. It just makes me mad at myself for not bringing the pamphlet with me to the store and the store clerks for not being aware of what sales will be going on later in the week.
If I had a patient and the family came to me and said, "I want to go home (a plane ride away) how is my mother?" I read her chart and talked with the doctor (which is what I would try to do as a good nurse) and know two days from now she is going to have a surgery that wasn't yet discussed with the family, do I say to the family that today she is great go home, (keeping in mind patients can always just die) or should I say- "I think it would be a good idea to talk to the doctor because he may have scheduled some procedures for your mother and before you make the decision about going home it would be in every one's interest to talk with the doctor." But to just look at what is just in front of you is short sighted. That is just my opinion and I will be going down on the weekend to take advantage of the 40% off!

New old News

Liz or Elizabeth as I insisted that we call her when she was named but, onto the new old news... Liz and Dad were talking and he discussed a story dealing with my Uncle Bobby. Bobby died in the Funeral Home in the 1970's I believe... he had always been like a traveling sales man but he sold VA insurance. Unfortunately Bobby liked to drink, we all knew this, inspite of his drinking at least to me he was a very friendly nice man. I remember the year Mom had him down for Thanksgiving Dinner and the food was being passed "past him" and he was finding it hard to get any food on his plate. But, Dad told Liz that when Bobby was very young- they owned or managed one of the Hotel/Taverns in their past. Well Bobby was playing with a friend by the frieght elevators in the hotel and he pushed a button, his friend must have been under the elevator and he was killed. Bobby never got over that experience and the family felt that is one reason he drank as much a he did.

Home Safe

We had a wonderful time in Wisconsin. The weather turned bad on the trip home when we came to Pennsylvania. The weather turned to sleet until we pulled into our garage. Liz was sick over Thanksgiving but is feeling better now. Dad and Liz said they both had a nice time together unfortunately Liz couldn't taste the food that she so carefully cooked. Now the big push is on for Christmas and all that comes with it.

We have been buying and packing, the mattress in the middle should be a hoot. (we are putting a mattress in the middle of the Van so both Brian & I can rest during the drive to Wisconson- Gary just has to drive, poor guy)
Talked with Carl and he seems to be on the mend. We are loading up Laurens car with all of the presents for Liz... only kidding just a few bobbles for her to open at Christmas. Talked with Liz she has a cold and is working hard to get better before the Big day. Liz is buying the Gobbler... that reminds me did anyone see Palin pardoning the GREAT ALASKIN TURKEY... she is a turkey!

A New Writing Assignment

I have another writing assignment... this story is based on an experience I have had but with all stories things are made up so just enjoy the story!

She got up and walked into the kitchen to get a drink of ice-cold whole milk, none of that skim milk for her. She wanted the real stuff, at 13years old- calories or health was not of any concern. It would just be a delicious treat before calling it a night. The room was dark; the only light was coming from a low glow outside. Switching on the light inside she could see that it was her eldest brother running from a field at the edge of the property but something was not right. Her brother 16 years old at the time was rushing toward the house yelling for help. He was a handsome man with china white complexion, and dark black curly hair cut short per the fashion of the day. He was wearing a burgundy colored V-neck sweater and jeans. She was trying to process what she had just seen, first there had been a bright flash and someone was running…yelling for help. As the person was coming closer and closer to the back door of the kitchen, she just looked on with puzzlement. Was it really her brother? She first noticed the slate grey powder clinging to the skin surface, his face was unrecognizable. There was no visible blood, cuts or bruises. All she could see was a face covered with a slate grey powder, two eyes looking back at her filled with horror. There were so many thoughts racing through her head- what needed to be done, how could this be fixed, and what the heck happened out in that field?
What in God’s name had caused this disaster; she knew he had been building a rocket. It was in the time of Sputnik and the push to get men in space. Her brother’s first love had always been Physics, and his second was Science. When he was much younger, he experimented with chemistry sets, made a crystal radio, an intercom, and a gas-powered go-cart using a lawn mower engine. He even ventured into horror movies using his friends as actors. His intelligence had been a curse and a gift because it was difficult for him to find people that understood his passions.
The idea of building a rocket came to him one summer afternoon. He noticed the pole being used as a clothesline would be suitable for the central part of the rocket. He would just need a top capsule and fins to stabilize the rocket as it went into space. Then a parachute to bring the capsule back down and rocket fuel to get the rocket off the launch pad. Rocket fuel was the “Gorilla in the Room.” Their parent’s method of parenting was very hands off- as long as no one was injured during any project their kids attempted, it would be deemed a success. Even though her brother had done a great deal of research into propulsion, rocket design, math, physics, and the chemistry of launching a rocket, however something had gone wrong. That night he had been in the field conducting experiments into what combination would be the best to launch his rocket however, an explosion occurred with his face receiving essentially the entirety of the blast. What she viewed on his face was the residue of the chemical explosion.
He was not crying out for assistance but standing stoically in the kitchen as his parents came in from the front room and were trying to decide what they should do. His mother had begun by using a clean face cloth trying to remove the grey powder from his face. Everyone was stricken with panic and it was resonating in their voices with a gasp because it seemed that several layers of skin were coming off with each pass of the cloth. It was decided that this was something very serious and that it needed to be treated by a Doctor in a Hospital setting. She needed to watch the younger children so her brother, mother and father could rush him to the hospital. If the skin came off with a soft touch what would his face look like, how could they fix the mess her brother had gotten himself into?
She was too young to go visit her brother in the hospital. The staff at the hospital didn’t realize that she had been the one to see the horror on her brother’s face and her parents panic. She needed to see the healing process; however, the staff made that decision for her. Luckily, her brother was in the hospital for only ten days. On his triumphant return home, she had made banners welcoming him home. His face was white and smooth, the moles that had once been on his face were gone, - and the blast had blown off his moles.
The entire exploit was never really discussed. The rocket remained in her parent’s attic until her mother’s death. There was no more talk of space or any projects done without supervision. Her brother teamed up with a retired Physics Professor to work on prisms. His work won him a regional award in the Westinghouse Science Fair and a trip to San Francisco to compete for the National Westinghouse Science Prize. Unfortunately, her parents did not learn- they sent her brother alone to California; he survived his trip but it would have been nice to have at least one parent to cheer him on. He did not win the National prize but he won a college scholarship to a prestigious University. She would always remember the day they both walked out their high school together. There had been an all school assembly that day to honor her brother’s work with prisms. Seeing him on that stage was an experience that filled her with pride and even hero worship that was not repeated until she had her own children.

Carl is doing fine

I am as surprised as anyone can be but Carl had his surgery today, they found a loose bone floating around that was pushing on a nerve so they removed it and he did come through the surgery without any complications. I called him at the hospital and he did seem fine. But I worry that Carl will push himself to much. Pam is planning on going to NY the day after Thanksgiving. (Carl was to go before the surgery) I hope Pam has a great time, I have taken the kids in alone and done alright. Carl is staying home I hope. Grand-dad keeps trying to get Carl to NY via wheelchair etc. Grand-dad just doesn't understand. Carl should be coming home tomorrow if anyone want to call or what ever. I had the same surgery many years age and you do have to rest. When they do the surgery they put staples in your head and hock you to an apparatus that pulls your neck so they can see see the vertebra... his muscles in his neck will be sore and tired.
Penn State won and hurrah Jo-Pa is staying on.

Not much new

Sorry, I had a slow day today. Had a lovely conversation with both Brian and Jenni. Brian's studio may be done soon. Jenni had an adoption today except that (alcoholic dad which is very sad on it's own) the birth dad decided he wanted to reverse his decision of voluntarily relinquishing of his custody of the baby. So by law what is the answer... Jenni has to explore the Law and will get back to me. GAS IS DOWN TO $1.96 CAN YOU BELIEVE IT.... WOW. Senator Hiliary Clinton to be Secretary of State and a TV guy said that our country USA is going to get much worse before- if we respond correctly, it gets better.

I'm OK but Carl's having a bad day

Carl called me today, dad had said Carl was to have surgery, he told me that he did not have the surgery because he woke up in the middle of the night with his heart pounding and sweating. The doctor of anesthesia told Dr. Rajjoub that it was too dangerous to operate - they ruled out a Pulmonary Embolism felling it was a reaction to a pain medication he was taking they have postponed the surgery until next week. He also had his tooth pulled this last week- he has had a very busy week. I told him to rest until he reschedules surgery.
Brian made it to Yale and back to NJ- he had a very good day. Many graduate students from all over the world.

"All the NEWS that I feel like reporting"

My buttock hurts, I had a tiny benign growth removed, and it is not healing as I would like and it just bugs me. Then my foot hurts today- at my massage appointment today she worked for 5 minutes on my foot and now it is telling me that it does not like to be touched so stop! I made two calzone today; they looked good but I did not care for it. The calzone was done ok but it needed an extra something and I did not have it today. There is an update on trivia from Wisconsin. Well Jenni’s team lost last night but they are winning the overall when you count the points. The big upset is a team coming from out of nowhere- “Team-Team” (yes a stupid name but Wisconsin). The Dewi Decimators are almost out of here… but it will come down to the wire for this “TRIVIA CHALLENGE in MILWAUKEE,” stay tuned…
Here is a video clip of the view and it also captures how I feel about the idiots running these companies, they made cars they wanted to make. They gambled and lost but the people that will lose will be the workers. The House Committee asked the car makers if they would take less money and one man said he would take a $1.00 salary the other two Presidents of the Car Companies were very unsure, yes they like their $20,000,000 million dollar salary… how do you spend that much money!

Making it Work

I am sorry I missed yesterday, but I have been working almost non-stop to get my software to work to produce the ART SHOW project and it is driving me crazy... I wouldn't do it if it wasn't fulfilling in the end. I am just getting to know this software so be patient. Found out from Carl that he has several ruptured disc in his upper neck so now he has to decide what to do.
Jenni has been off having work and fun, she did get to go to Chicago. It is not New York. Gary was busy doing football and basketball games all....weekend. Gary and I have had some really good discussions this weekend and I can see that we are both trying and that is always a good thing. Jenni has informed me that her team is tied for winner with the Dewi Decimators and one of the male Decimators winked at her on Face Book before he knew who she was so is it a devious blot by the other team or could it just be fortune putting "her" hat in the ring. Good luck Jenni on Tuesday.

A POLL AT THE BOTTOM OF BLOG!

Carl's Pain

Today we have the 1st 4 star Female General. I am not a military person but there is a need to have people defend our society as a whole. Knowing that a woman is finally at the top is something to be proud of as a country.
I found out today that Carl has an infected tooth- antibiotics for that (that is a story, his Dentist is out of his office and his partner didn't take Carl's insurance so he went to Disalvo's home and got a script- told you), then recovering from Carpal Tunnel surgery (had to transcript the longest O-bit I have ever seen (over $1000.00 onto a computer plus other fussy little details he needed to do) now he had a MRI because he can't stand the pain going down his arms or arm not sure. I feel so bad. He called about something else and we talked, I have a sling that might help so Pam came and got it. Pam also invited us up for Thanksgiving dinner which I think was so kind but we are GOING WEST OR BUST to see our lovely Jenni who better be cleaning for us. Only kidding Jenni.

A Mothers Praise

You will have to forgive me for what I am going to say- because I am a mother; specifically because I am Brian’s mom. I was looking through Brian’s web site, and at his Art Work. His work is so beautiful, it astounds me, colors bleeding from one layer into another with sparkles of gold’s or pinks; varying from painting to painting the magic is different. I am just in awe of his talent. Where do the ideas come from and how does he execute his thoughts into something we see. I have but just one of his painting... to see it in the correct light in person is a treat.
(PS. I love Jenni too)

Just a quick blog

I hate the end of day lite savings time. By 5:30pm the sun is down and I still have things I want to get done but I just can't wrap my head around doing anything. I do some computer stuff but darn it I have much more to do. I have started to pick things up for Christmas... little stocking stuffers... not little in price. I had two doctors appointments today, everything is on track. It does amaze me that Gary's work although thankfully gives us health insurance, prescriptions still cost so much.

Go Brian

A very fortune city native gives $1 million dollars to academy (pajama factory) where Brian has his studio. See the article below for more info.
http://www.sungazette.com/page/content.detail/id/518550.html?nav=5011
Brian continues to work hard on his art. I am very excited about Saturday when they have a big day up at the studio.
The nightly news is so disturbing that I want to scream. The bail out seems to be for the business man not for the "common man". Is the bail out for the Bank presidents salaries? Please someone tell me when are the poor people going to get benefit- jobs, loans, & better % for us giving them our money. If I hear one more executive get a massage- I paid for my own massages when we went away. We as people are being asked to understand and it is the old rabbit in the hat trick, I never liked magic because I want to see how things work... I want to know how is our country getting better. President Elect Obama I can't wait until you flush the BUSH's out!

I was watching TV and there was an update... 30 years ago the "Jones town" mass suicide occurred and it made me think. The premise sounded good, all people living in perfect harmony. However, the leader that can put together a perfect society must also believe that he is still a "common" man. Not someone who elevates himself into a God as Jim Jones did. I can't understand why people do what they do. Why do we hurt each other? I can imagine that people do things unintentional without malice. However when behavior is repeated, it is difficult to believe that it is not malicious. As I say this I must also say that while I was growing up I heard my father yelling at his brothers (at work) and on occasion at us children and my Mom. Therefore, I know I have his quick temper and do react to situations in a way that is hurtful to the people around me. I do apologize for my behavior after if I realize I have been hurtful but many times, it is so quick we go on with the things of the day. That is no excuse, because for me I have said that if you know you have done something wrong stop doing it. Therefore, this is the human dilemma. Good people, self-aware people that examine their daily behavior and still do not change. I hope to continue this discussion tomorrow... any comments on the topics you care to share please leave them here or email me ... I would love input.

Orangutan Island is on again

This was a pit stop for the Amazing Race tonite. I forget how crowded India is. The stop also was a place that Grand-dad and his group stopped while they visited Deli. I noticed that the "fog" was bothering people on the show. Brian is still in NJ coming home Monday to get ready for the big Governor's Week starting here this week. A great many neat things are going on. You can find info at http://williamsportarts.com/. it will have shows, installations, concerts, the JV Brown library dedicating the new children's wing, and so much more. Jenni had a chili cook off to raise money.

Orangutan Island is back on, on the Animal Planet channel- Donald got sick at the end of last season. He recovered but became ill again with the same unknown disease on the season premier and is being missed by Chen Chen who is his best friend. Donald died of a blood disease at the end of the episode.

Splat

Splat... this is a picture I was working on ... I know it doesn't look like much but it took about 3 hours, I don't know what I was thinking. Penn State lost... I couldn't even watch the end... it was down to just seconds. Then I made 3 little cookies, all the ddough I had left... I like to bake a fresh cookie before I go to bed but the heat was sky high (my fault) well beside going shopping for 3 little things (one I have to exchange) today was a SPLAT day. It came, it went, and now it's done!

The end of the week

I don't have much to say but everyday seems a little better because I don't have to listen or pay attention to W anymore. It is so pleasant to see President Elect Obama on the screen. I did see a new report about people in the US rushing out to buy any kind of gun they can because the new President will be taking away their very freedom. I don't think Obama is going to do that but NOW THEY KNOW HOW WE FELT FOR THE past 8 years. I truly don't think Obama is going to change the laws, maybe restricting semi-automatic guns but time will tell. Carl had surgery on his wrist for carpel tunnel. I think he will have the other one done at another time. Maddy is not coming up to visit us in Williamsport she scheduled a Colonoscopy and we will miss her.

ING is irksome

I started out with saying that I had a quiet day but the more I thought about it the more I remembered. I was checking my money accounts last nite and then I thought of what Jenni said to me and got upset. It has to do with ING, every time you turn around Jenni is getting money for signing up for accounts. Gary and I have had an account with ING for 20 years so I said to myself what the heck is up with that. At 1am last night, I decided what I was going to do and I started my plan. I got the info I needed and started writing a letter because I want to complain by snail mail, email and maybe by phone. I- have –had- it! I will let you know if I get anywhere with my complaining. I put a shoot out to Madeline, she has had cataract surgery on Monday. From what I hear she is doing well. Going for tonight- have a good day.

A New Era

When I was in high school, there was one black student in our entire school. Now I think how difficult that must have been for that young girl. I also remember going to a “Disco” in Williamsport on a Friday night; the dance was empty. There were my friends and I with about 10 young black men they danced in a circle around us I became very frightened. I was 16 or 17 years old at the time, the young men were not inappropriate but I felt that I was in a foreign environment so we left, and that was my only experience with persons of color. In 1969 I went to Harrisburg for nursing training and we lived in a predominantly black neighborhood. I did see black and white at the time. Brian and Jenni talk about not seeing color, they went to the same high school I did and it is much more integrated 40 years later. To be clear, in 1964-1969 being Jewish was different in our neighborhood. As I write this on November 5th and we have President Barack Obama as our new President. I truly feel that our country is starting a New Era, one of hope and optimism.

Life is what happens when not looking

I read an old post & want to update... no small feat, Gary lovingly replaced all the plugs and lamps that where bugging me... so THANK YOU DEAR... you did very good. If anyone doubts my sincerity read my second post and you will see the frustration I was feeling before they were fixed.
I have noticed lately on TV, observing how things have changed, things once unthinkable- for example: I was so delighted that there was to be a female announcer doing the stock report, a female using her brain. We saw a cute face on the side line that probably knew sports but was only permitted to do fluff pieces and look pretty. I am watching a doc-o-drama about the Chicago 7- there are NO women interviewed at the time the protest took place, it seems that it was even a MAN's world to hate the way the Nation was being run.Now in 2008 we have women reporting from the floor of the NY Stock Exchange, women in the sports booth with men (not to the degree we should be seeing them), women protesting and running for office to change our government. And concurrent coverage of the women and men running the NY Marathon. I do find this a very funny event because whether my children are aware of it or not, one of the longest running arguments between Gary and I has been one dealing with running a Marathon. For at least 25 years Gary and I discussed whether it is humanly possible for a woman and a man run a Marathon in record setting time. Gary response (as I remember) was that women will never catch up with men. The first woman to run in a marathon occurred as “The "Boston Incident" of 1967.. (and that)… was the spark that ignited the woman's running revolution…”
Women have not been running for thousands of years like men so, women’s bodies my take time to catch up (only my opinion). I think that there will be a time when the human body can only go so fast and even though it may take hundreds of years, I think women will someday be running side by side, the best of each gender and then that will be a race! AND THAT JENNI CAN OUT RUN GARY, ME, AND BRIAN, along with that she finishes!!! Go Jenni… the first woman was only in 1967.

All Souls Day

We pray for all the Saints...they are put off making the old Pope a Saint... maybe if they wait long enough the world would forget.
Oh my neck hurts...
I hope to make Balthazar's French Toast in the morning. I have been excited since about this toast for weeks... I need to find Brioche bread so that I can make more. So tomorrow 1 piece each.
I wish I could think of something to do for Mom (Regina)... Dad & his family donated a stained glass window in their Mom's name and then a plate both in churches. I would love to do something for within the JV Brown Library. http://www.jvbrown.edu/support.html
If anyone reading this has an idea please send an email.

Why do some excel?

I want to start out by saying that I am happy with my Life.
I watched a show tonight and the premise was that one man paid $500,000 for another man’s life. This included everything… his name; college degrees (archeologist), anything he did, research, and the main man would just walk away and start over. This got me to thinking; you hear of people coming from nothing and making it big. Was it their ambition, luck, who they knew, money that makes one man achieve more than the guy standing right next to him. At Dad’s work a man we know well got “Employee of the Institution”, yet another example. On the show the man how took over the main man’s life took the career, friends, and relationship and ran with it. He made a huge find (archeology), had friends eating out of his hands, money, and women. The main man, who gave everything up, had spent the $500,000 dollar on bad investments and other bad ideas. So he was jealous and he killed the imposter so he could cash in again on the fame and wealth the other man had made. Just my thoughts for today.
Joe Biden came to Williamsport.

Va-va-va-voom

"Men may not even realize that red turns them on more than, say, blue, green or brown, and a woman in red may not necessarily be perceived as more likeable, kind or intelligent in the hue. But she’s definitely got more power in the va-va-va-voom department."
http://www.wowowow.com/post/want-be-sexier-try-wearing-red-131460?ap=131534 a very interesting article from Wowowow web site. I guess that is why my favorite color is red!

Lawyer's blight

http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/33422524.html will lead you to a site that gives you the inside scoop on Jenni's blight... so please check it out. Which is sad because Brian is enjoying his time at his studio. I will get more info and put it into my blog tomorrow, hopefully.
Jenni called with a late breaking WIN a 39 out of 40 and there was a ruling on having an extra person. Because cheating was reported to the people responsible at the Bar from anonymous source (Jenni) the ruling is: you will have a 2 point deduction, but there was dismay because it was not retroactive. This triva game is heating up and I will keep you up to date.

An interesting conversation

People that know Jimmy Arp will get a laugh out of this... his new girl friend is a friend of Jenna Bush yes the Jenna Bush and he is going to a Halloween Party this weekend at her house in Baltimore!

I have “my chair” in the front room and I am having problems with it so I called Keystone Furniture and they sent a man out to fix it. He arrived and on the TV in the front room CNN was on but muted. Obama was giving some kind of speech- the man fixing my chair said, “Is he your guy”? I answered, “Yes he is”. Just having a conversation of this nature is remarkable to me, not that this man could have an opinion but that he was moved to speak of it to me. He talked about how bad the economy is, I was careful not to be a pushy Democrat. He went on to say that he had voted for Bush and then did some reading about the lies we as a country were feed which lead us to the horrible state the entire country is in now. He was looking for a Republican that could fix our country… Ron Paul was a name he used. Brian said that Paul was very anti-war. I just find it interesting that we as a people in this country are coming together because the Bush Administration so screwed up this country that it crosses over party lines to fix it.

Trees of Fall (my lastest story)

Summer turns to fall, you can sense the changing of the seasons by the smell of burning leaves and a dampness caused by the autumn rains. The stunning vistas of the leaves changing color- the Maple Trees turn bright red, with the Sugar Maple you can see the yellow, orange colors and White Oak and Beech leaves turn brown. You look at the landscape and see a patch work quilt of colors made by Mother Nature for our pleasure as we are eased into the brutality of winter. As a child I woke up to what Jack Frost had painted on my windows; the picture laced with intricate patterns imprinted on glass that resemble lace and snowflakes until the sun melted them to rebuild the next frosty morning. Crisp apples used for bobbing and for making pies. A fireplace ablaze with a roaring fire, everyone wrapped in their sleeping blankets sipping hot chocolate and waiting for the stories to begin.
Momma comes in from the kitchen with her usual big hot mug of coffee, the mug was a Mother’s Day gift from my sister…it has pictures of all the kids decorating the outside.
She puts her cup down on an apple wood table beside the antique Irish rocker as she rocked back and forth, she is draped in a blanket with muted fall colors made by my Great-Great Grandmother.
“It is said back in Ireland that at midnight on Halloween night horrible things happen to children if they are not home and in bed. The tree fairies, they get very angry because this is their time to party, ooh… if any child thinks he is so brave to go out on that night to see the fairies party well they will be mighty sorry”. Ma, takes a sip of her coffee, while we wait with fretful anticipation. We snuggle closer to each other, not from the cold but with an uneasiness that comes from listening to Momma’s stories. “What happen to the children Momma?” I speak up nervously.
“The evening festivities ‘All Hallowtide- the Feast of the Dead’ always started with a meal which was followed by cake with a coin buried inside, if you got the coin you would have wealth in your future. Then after dinner you would carve your pumpkin lantern to scare away evil spirits or the girls would peel an apple- if you peeled the apple in one piece then you would drop the peel and see the initial of the man you would marry. All the children would dress in costumes to scare the devils and fairies away so they could go house to house to trick-or-treat. The fairies are always looking for children to steal away into the forest…never to be seen again. We lit bonfires to keep us safe while we all bob for apples, sing songs as someone plays mournful tunes on the violin. It can be such a merry time if you get home before midnight”. “What happens to the children that are not seen again?” I ask again with vexed concern.
“Oh, I know you would not want to be caught out after midnight but I asked my Momma the same question many years ago…and this is what she told me. A neighbor boy and his brother were determined to see a fairy on that night of Halloween, so after all the festivities and everyone had gone to bed. They slipped out of bed- put on pants and green knit sweaters their mother had made them, tip toeing past their parents and out the door. They could see the bonfire slowly dying, with only embers left. The pumpkins in the windows, still burning to keep the spirits away, as they got near the edge of town the younger brother began to have second thoughts and begged his brother to return home to their soft bed and their parents. But, the older brother pushed on, he said he could not live if he didn’t see the fairies. As they walked along the path, he spotted a bog just off the trail. There was a white mist coming up from the ground and a light, yellow in color dancing around the forest. They realized it wasn’t one light but many little lights leaping and jumping around a small campfire in the middle of a grove of Alder trees. They crept closer hiding behind the underbrush but, the earth was giving away quickly to moss and deep pockets of water. It was getting very difficult to walk, but the oldest brother continued onto the fairies. Before the youngest brother knew what was happening the older brother was dancing, skipping, jumping and flying around the camp fire. Only fairies fly, not the oldest brother, because people don’t fly. The younger brother rubbed his eyes in disbelief…fairies are just a flight of fancy, something parents told their child to keep them in line. The younger brother desperately wanted to shout out to his older brother to come back, had he forgotten that once the fairies saw him he won’t be allowed to leave…he would be lost… his brother would never come home again. The fairies had seen the oldest brother and welcomed him, giving him something to drink and eat.
As they danced you could hear the flutes and violins of the forest being played by the sounds of nature. All the sounds you hear as you walk on a windy day in the deep forest…the barn owls, the crickets, and leaves swaying make up a melodious symphony.
The oldest brother was now among the fairies, he enjoyed their ecstasy. The younger brother watches from afar afraid to move. The night emerges into dawn. He sees his older brother leaning against a tree stump falling asleep while the fairies dance around him celebrating. The youngest brother was afraid to sleep thinking that he will never see his brother again… but the dawn causes his eyes to close. Several hours pass and the morning birds song awakes him with a rush of energy… he looks over and sees his brother has been replaced by a new tree. The youngest brother jumps up to run over to where his brother once stood. “Oh Mother…Father something is wrong help… help… help…come quick”! The youngest brother ran into the village with an ashen face and out of breath, he finds his family and regales them with the story of the last eight hours.
The family walked to the grove of Alder trees, to find that there was nothing left of my flesh and blood brother, he has been replaced by an Alder tree”.
Momma continued, “This is the story passed down by our family…no other child has been lost to the fairies. They say the sign can be seen when you look at a tree with a large knot on the trunk of the tree. This is another reason why the Alder tree is known as an unlucky tree, no one likes to cut down an Alder tree because it could be someone’s child”.
My Momma stopped rocking and looked into our stunned faces. Our mouths still frozen in disbelief… she realized she had shaken us to the core.
“Now children you know this is just an Irish myth but you know the knots on some trees, well” as Momma moves close to our own faces “they are the children’s faces buried in the trunk of trees…children taken by the fairies on Halloween. You can see them watching you as you walk by!”
Poppa walks into where we are gathered and begins laughing along with Momma, we have a collective sigh of relief and scoot into the kitchen for warm cookies just out of the oven. We know that this is just one of Momma’s stories that we file away until we have our own children and want to scare the life out of them.

Go Penn State - I did get get it to work.. give it a try.

Friday, October 24, 2008

Liz called me today and we talked about her being trained as a lineman... she has started her virtual training. She has a controller for her computer and that is how she gets her "on the job training". That sounds real safe and in Detroit Michigan to boot.
I am sorry I missed James coming into town... so if you are reading this, I am sorry I missed you.
Dad was here for pizza on Friday... he is going to the Harmonia for dinner and a concert on Saturday. Madeline has arrived home from what she said was a wonderful trip.
Jenni had a bad week but she finds the work very rewarding. My dream of being a nurse, is hard to let go. They are regulating that we have to get CEU which I agree with but I have decided to go retired. I will save that for tomorrows post.
Brian made a wonderful area to keep his paintings... the problem is his painting are so large. I wish we had a big place to keep his work. His studio is coming along they are butting up walls.

Liz's Story

Liz wrote to me about a new on the job training she might be getting: "my job description if the AT&T union goes on strike. I was supposed to not have to do this but they changed their plans and made me a Phone splicer in Detroit, MI if their is a strike, we start training in Jan. It's just silly!!!!!"
You go Liz
Went to the foot Doc today... no burrs just some arthritis, I have to wear shoe inserts and soak my feet then go back in 3 weeks so we will see. Madeline will be coming home soon ... look forward to hearing the details... see earlier post.
Reese our neighbor torn his Achilles tendon and is in a cast up to his knee for 10 weeks... non-weight bearing so sitting in a chair for 10 weeks can you imagine. Tore it in a soccer game.

Remembering Mom"s Birthday

I am remembering Mom's birthday today. I have included a video of a 2002 birthday party for Mom at my house hope everyone can watch and enjoy.
Jenni called in the results for Trivia last nite... she passed on that a scandal has occurred within the league and she is not going to stand for it. The Dewie Decimators had nine people on the team and they have been warned that the limit is eight! So they lost last nite but the ruling is under protest. I will keep you informed.
I am going for a massage today... I know it means nothing to anyone else but I love a good massage.
I have included A VOTE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE SO REMEMBER TO VOTE!
Check out Brian's website and his lastest Video Blog at http://khingkobra.blogspot.com/

Going Golfing

Everyone watching the video should know that we did not do that to Carmel... she got into that fix herself and we did get her out of it.
I just wanted to laugh today so I brought back a favorite from my video vault.
Gary and I went looking for golf clubs at Dick's Sporting Goods... my gosh the clubs are weird. They are huge and are so light, he bought a wood, a 3 wood and an iron so he hopes to get back to playing golf. I would enjoy playing again if I could. So time will tell.

How could I not remember today

I was watching “Cold Case” and it deals with roller disco in 1978. I don’t remember roller disco being the big thing but just as I say that I thought… Liz had a severe eye injury from the roller rink accident. So maybe skating was big and I just don’t have a good memory. There are so many years that have gone by… my mind just can’t hold all the info. What is like for someone 120 years old… that is why I do blogging and keep a diary.

Sorry I forgot

Sorry I forgot to do my post on Saturday... I got very busy making brownies that ended up tasting terrible. I got so into making them that I lost track of time. Today I went to Wegmans and then called Grand-dad, after I went up to visit him. He was going to Mary Ann's house for dinner. It was a beautiful day, the leaves are at their peak. Jeff and Mary are visiting Liz and then going down to South Carolina to visit family.
Gary is going to get back into golf... which I think is a good idea.

After Talking with Jenni

Jenni and I talked on the phone last nite and I was very sad because she has a case in her office that deals with child abuse.
I know all child abuse is horrible but it just baffled me that parents who for some reason burn their child (accident or not) instead of taking the child to the ER they wait a day. First, they said in the ER that the child had gotten into medication in the mom’s purse and then gotten sick. Well the real story, as we now know it…the child was screaming because of the burn and the mother dosed the child with 50 doses of Methadone….under 2 years of age…50 doses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a controlled NARCATIC, the mother had several scripts written by different doctors but the legal department didn’t want to prosecute (I don’t judge it could be a minor problem in the scheme of things), but I thought this abuse should be attempted Murder and I know it sounds extreme but I looked up attempted murder and there are a lot of bench marks that have to be met. Here is my claim: if a mom gives a child Tylenol to relieve the pain- most parents don’t know that Tylenol is deadlier than most anything because Tylenol cannot be removed from the body- it stays in the body where Methadone has Narcan that reverses the affect and dialysis along with other remedies. I say that the parents wanted to shut the kid up and damn the consequences. We treat our child with so little regard, we need to treat children as people that have physical and emotional limitations… if the baby is crying and not stopping there is something wrong. That is my rant for today.

Maddy

Maddy has left for a cruise of a life time. She is taking the Queen Elizabeth 2 for the final trip across the Atlantic, and then flying home from England.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/17/nyregion/17ship.html?ei=5070&emc=eta1
is a good site for information on the final voyage
Brian and Gary are working on a way to store Brian's paintings in the basement. Brian has met with the people at the studio and one of the painters Michael Pilato wants to paint Brian... "The Giant". I hope to see the end result.

My lastest story

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I remember walking from school along a path to my home and there were beautiful, dainty, azure flowers that grew among the weeds, I called them wild violets. I picked them lovingly everyday when they were in bloom from early April until school was out in June. They would be a gift to my Mother. On arriving home I would wrench open the front door which was quickly followed by a thud as the door hit the back wall, loud noises in our home seemed to fade into the background. I quickly ran to Mom and pushed the flowers I had gathered into her face, she was so kind and understanding, there was no fragrance and the flower usually died within hours of my presenting them to her, but as a child I felt that I was showering her with priceless purple gemstones. What I saw in her face and in hers eyes, was love and kindness. I knew, for this short period of time, I was the center of her world. Mom would stop what she was doing and let me regale her with all the activities of my day.

Wrong Diagnosis

Brian told me about the Dali Lama… he was hospitalized in the summer thinking that he had “exhaustion”. Just recently the Dali Lama was rehospitalized … guess what… he was finally diagnosed with gallbladder disease. He had his gallbladder removed so even the Dali Lama can’t get good medical care.
"The Dalai Lama is believed to be the current incarnation of a long line of Tulkus, or Buddhist Masters, who have become exempt from the wheel of death and rebirth. These ascended masters have chosen of their own free will to be reborn to this place in order to teach humanity." So the medical community screws even a reincarnation of a God.
Another thing that happened...Gary fixed my light...that has been driving me cray for months.

We Are Penn State

I was watching the PENN STATE SHOW this morning and it had a good story, the video is as close as I could find…the man in this piece was first recuited by Miami… when he wrote and told Miami he was black they took back the scholarship. He was picked up by Penn State. The Miami story is mentioned in clip. That year they went onto the Cotton Bowl, he was the first black player to play in the Cotton Bowl. After the bowl game they called a meeting and another player said, “What are we to do about playing teams that don’t allow blacks to play on their field” and then another player said, “Well, we are Penn State”. That is what “We Are-Penn State” chant statement came from. Wally Triplett was the first black to play in the Cotton Bowl, the first black to be drafted by the NFL, and the first black NFL player to be drafted into the Korean War.

A Night Out

Sorry I missed Saturday's blog... I was resting all day so I could go out with Gary Saturday Night. We went to the Kast Hotel and met with his Frate Brothers... we had a nice time. My arm is hurting for now over and out!

A Sunny Friday

Gary had his Alumni Golf outing today...sunny for the second year in a row. We had horrendous rain in years past. He enjoyed playing golf although he needs new clubs to be competitive so maybe for Christmas. Brian had a falling out with his Psychiatrist, very, very difficult. Jenni is playing rugby up by Chicago then going down to Madison for the Penn State vs Wisconson game then going home then going back up to Chicago to play Ruby. I asked Jenni just be safe and don't wear yourself out.
I have not recovered from New York yet... I am still coming off the medication I needed to relieve the pain caused by the trip. I hope to go out tomorrow with Gary.

Sunday of our Vacation

We woke up and had breakfast at the hotel. Strangely a street fair was setup outside our hotel.... where else in the world can you stay in a hotel and have a street fair outside the front door. We drove through the city...there are lovely parks located all over the city. There is one with a waterfall that we passed going through the city. Then we headed off to see Yankee Stadium. I have included pictures of everything.

Saturday

On Saturday of our vacation we got up and got all day passes for the subway only $7.50, then up to Balthazar's Restaurant for their famous French Toast (featured on Martha Stewart)... I have put pictures on the web site. Then we went to the Tenement museum, the Reuben Museum, Madison Park that had tree house instillation, and a lot of other places just walking around. This damn old laptop will not upload my pictures so I am trying to put them on the display to the left of this post otherwise I will post when I get my new computer fixed. Oh I forgot Liz was rear ended in her car... lots of damage to car but Liz is okay. Jenni is busy working on first trial in awhile... good luck Jenni. Gary has been very busy getting ready for the Homecoming weekend and the golf tournment... which is being named in Tom Croyles name. Gary is going to play... wish him luck! Jenni came in 3rd but beat the Dewey Decimators so it is ok.

Our First Day

My damn computer is in the shop so I am using my old laptop and it goes very, very slow! I love to blog so this is driving me crazy. Well, I will start off my blog with last Friday, the first day of our anniversary celebration. Gary and I talked about celebrating our anniversary, the first 5 years we went away in the fall it is our favorite time of year. After Jenni was born we never went out of town, which was ok, but I do miss our trips. Last year we went to Oregon in September, this year will be the first time in over 30 years that we will have gone away on our anniversary. Our first day was punctuated by a “police action” which delayed us for 2 1/2 hours. We entered the Lincoln Tunnel at 5 and got out at 7:30. The Police action involved a bottle of Snappel at the entrance of one of the tunnels, we had room service and stayed in. The hotel was lovely.

Wouldn't you know

Wouldn’t you know…? I told Dad (granddad) months ago that he had to diversify his money because the bank is only liable for up to 100,000.00 each depositor know they are talking about changing it to 250,000.00… it seems that the World just seems to change to suit Dad. It is crazy! I heard on the radio that “everyone in the US should get 1.2 million… they used it to pay off mortgages and credit card that in turn goes back into the economy more taxed are paid… rather than given the CEO 700 Billion dollars”… I love the idea. It will never happen but I like the idea. The problem is that a lb. of sugar would just to 500 so the little people would still get screwed.

THE DOW DOWN 777

This is so frustrating... the DOW dropped 777+ points todays. What things this could do to our economy… people could lose. Brian ran into Mrs. Kriner at Giant store and she was fired from her job. New owners came in and they wanted their people so after at least 20 years she worked she was let go. What is going to happen to people that have their money in the stock market. Gary and I tried that for a while and I tired of it, worrying about the up and down. You can get caught up with all the excitement!

Great Job Gary

The grass is growing gang busters... it is slow but it is so nice to go out and see the lawn from one day to the next.

Liz wrote to me about her day last week... I am so sorry.
P.S. My string of bad luck continues, I got a traffic ticket today for failing to obey a posted sign, I apparently didn't stop at a Stop sign for long enough and the undercover cop was sitting right there. I was cooking salmon and rice for my friends for dinner tonight and didn't realize until it was too late that my rice cooker was broken so all I had to serve was uncooked rice and fish. Then I put my dish towel down on the stove and it caught on fire and I was lucky to get it into the sink in time. What a week, bad luck!!!!!

A Reckless Life

Bringgggggggggggggggg… hello this is John Steal’s phone, may I take a message? No he is not in… I know you have been calling for days. I am sorry he isn’t in but I can take a message. I know Mr. Sapp, I have told him that you want to talk to him- yes I can leave another message… I am sorry, I know, yes I know, I will tell him how important it is … yes, thank you, hope you have a better day, ok … thank you.
My God if Mr. Steal doesn’t start answering… or at least calling these people back Karen I am going to go to Human Resources and demand to be moved to another department … I can’t take this much longer. You know when he first started here I thought he would be someone nice to work for.
He was 24, straight out of Harvard Business school … nicely dressed and a smile… but he always looked like he knew something no one else knew. He laid low … you could see him watching everybody… joined in just enough but really said nothing. No one knew anything about him or his family life. No pictures of the family or mementos- it was nothing I could complain about …but, I knew something wasn’t quite “kosher”.
But Marge, the first few months he was here he was a …very …considerate man… lately… over the last 6 months, he has been involved in something unethical and possibly criminal. He has changed since he first came to “The Company”. The upfront problem is not if we like him, the problem is what should be done now. No one at the firm has an inkling of what he is doing. He has been coming in at night to do paper work that he doesn’t want anyone to see but… I found something he meant to shred.
Karen… what were you doing in his office? “I just had papers I needed to put on his desk. But, while I was in there …I found these papers wedged between the file cabinets. It was a preliminary bid for a home right outside of King’s Court. The dilemma is that the city is bidding on the contracts to buy all of King’s Court Housing and converting the property into ‘Luxury’ apartments, to revitalize the area. Well, Mr. Steal has been going to the surrounding home owners and buying up the property so he can flip them and make a mint. The King’s Court deal is hush-hush, we know about it because we have to file papers but how he found out I don’t know. Many of the people have been trying to sell for years; they are willing to sell for rock bottom prices to get out of the area”.
Several weeks pass… Mr. Steal is becoming more and more erratic. Marge, your phone is ringing… do you want me to get it … no Karen I’ve got it…“Yes, Mr. Steal I will cancel all your appointments … but you know that the head of the firm has a 4 o’clock meeting scheduled with the entire senior staff. Yes, I will tell him you will try to make it”.
Karen I think that Mr. Steal may finally be called onto the carpet. The Senior V.P. met with the corporate lawyers yesterday… most times you can hear them chatting about their golf games… you know small talk but, not this time. They looked very uneasy… I heard that during the meeting they made several calls to the Housing Authority and even to the Mayor’s office.
Marge I still say that Mr. Steal’s personality has changed over the past year, first he bought a 15’ Schooner, and then … a vintage 1958 Red Aston-Martin and he had been driving in a 1995 Mini-Van. How does he afford these things… it is just so different from the conservative man he was when he first came here. He comes in at all different hours and he’s not eating … he’s lost at least 20 pounds. It is just very strange… I feel sorry for him, something is just weird.
“Excuse me ladies, but have either of you seen or heard from Mr. Steal today”? “Oh, Mr. Herd- Mr. Steal said he will try to make it to the meeting at 4pm”. “Well, send him to my office Karen, as soon as he gets in… I have something of great consequence to discuss with him”. Mr. Herd was anxiously wringing his hands while looking around the office…“Do you know where he is because… this really can’t wait”.
Just as we were talking… the elevator door “pings” then opens…. John Steal walks onto the floor. He moves to greet Mr. Herd with a grim face. I notice he has a bandage on his left arm… like he had blood drawn at a hospital. The men walked out of the area toward the President’s Office. There was a quietness that came over the entire office…. I found myself holding my breath, what is happening… I looked at Marge and shook my head.
Moments later there was a voluble thud… the stillness was replaced by chaos. “Call 911 someone… call 911… oh my God he’s having a seizure… its Mr. Steal…. give him room to breathe… he’s having a seizure”. Only seconds later we heard the ambulance sirens resonate through the streets and stop at our building… we would usually jump up to see what was happening to some nameless person down the street but it was our turn now and people are looking at us… I feel violated. Why do people have to know our business!
That day was certainly a day I will remember…it has been about two months since the entire commotion occurred. The ambulance arrived in time Mr. Steal did have a Grand-Mal Seizure… he had been to a Neurologist earlier in the day. The doctor found shadows on the X-ray preformed several days before… and they felt that he would be able to go to the executives of the company and explain…unfortunately the tumor was more serious and caused him to seizure. He was admitted to an area hospital and received immediate surgery.
After the surgery Mr. Steal awakened as a completely different man. It seems that the tumor had been growing for some time, possibly several years and just before he came to the company the tumor had caused amnesia. He had wandered away from his life, in Colorado, he did graduate from college just not Harvard- somehow he fabricated all his credentials because he was ashamed to tell anyone he didn’t know his past. Then when the tumor began to grow rapidly…. that is when his personality changed radically. He cheated home owners, he violated laws by defrauding the people when he knew about the deal our firm had with the city to turn King’s Court into luxury apartments. He also started living a more reckless life… buying boats, cars and doing drugs along with parties on the weekends. I did finally discover that Mr. Sapp was a private investigator hired to find Mr. Steal … who for some reason thought he was after him and did everything he could to hide himself from the one man who knew at least a part of his past. Also Mr. Steal’s real name was John Smith.
The authorities are working out settlements with the home owners… he has sold the expensive toys and has been reunited with his wife and two children.

Another Friday

Dad came to dinner today for pizza; he had some sad news… Brian McKernan is getting a divorce. Uncle Bob came to visit Dad and he caught him up on family matters. Brian and his wife built a house on Martha’s Vineyard and they had a dispute over a Country Club they were to join… they fought and that ended the marriage. Then Aunt Jean… well Mike’s daughter is getting married at the Williamsport Country Club… Uncle Bob is sponsoring them and he is the only one invited to the wedding. We have all the problems that every family has.

Another Beautiful Day

Brian did another art piece and I want to put the link to his Blog page:http://khingkobra.blogspot.com/2008/09/ill-be-your-mirror.html
so go an check it out. The picture does not unfortunately show how beautiful it is... you need to see it in person. Like so many works of art they are better seen in a museum with the correct lighting so maybe someday this will come to pass.
A shout out to Liz... she had a quart of paint fall off a shelve in the garage and she ran over it with her car......EXPLOSION.... a big mess to clean up and she still has to paint the front door.
So sorry Liz.

Crouse Arrested... not close relative

I hope I did not give the wrong impression... the Crouse I am referring to is Grand-pa Crouse's brother John. So it is our family, a sadly to say a little strange side... I did a video interview... I will have to put some on my blog soon. Unfortunately he didn't know his Grand-dad had been public enemy no. 1 but he does now

Dad's tale

I was talking with Dad (Grand-dad at dinner) about the depression... how it seemed to affect Mom (Grammy) so much more than Dad. He said that the boot-legging did help. Grandpa Crouse was willing to try many different things. He was a house painter, he did many of the local schools and he bought the Funeral Home then renovated it into a women's boarding house. Also it seems that the bank was going to foreclose on 133 East so they sold the back lot for $5,000 and at that time that was a lot of money.
I was also told they first lived where the Red Cross Headquarter is located on East 3rd St. and if I remember right...Gary lived in the same building in college before it became the Red Cross Headquarter.

WATCHING GRASS GROW

Now that dad is done with the kitchen... those pictures are coming but Gary is working hard now on the backyard. Carmel peed and pooped all over the back yard and Gary has been trying for several years to clean up those spots so I will be putting on going pics of the backyard as we WATCH THE GRASS GROW ha ahahahahahah! But so true.
Jenni's team won again... the Dewey decimators had enough player for a Junior and Senior team and Jenni's team beat them both. So Jenni doesn't have to pay for drink again. Everyone is happy.

Wilbur Ross: Possibly a Thousand Banks Will Close

entire information at:http://www.cnbc.com/id/26710362

How do we keep doing this- in the article they say this is like the 1990's... how do we not learn. Is it that a new group of men (but it is men that get to the top) that need to get rich they build their empires on the backs of the working class, then hide their money or make so much that if they lose a few million it won't bother them then they put the screws to the rest of us. Why don't we stop this!

I know I sound like a nut... but why can't we as a species just work, I don't care if some people make lots of money... I don't like to Jet all over and go to parties nite and day. But we should be civilized enough to be less greedy. If the lenders were not so greedy to get commissions... oh I don't know, maybe I'll just try to run for Vice President!

A Short Story by Me

Her Mourning Eyes

Code blue…code blue…room 305… code blue, room 305 … was announced over the hospital loudspeaker… it was 6am, I was coming to the end of a night shift in CCU, it was my turn to be a first responder. “I’m going, I’m going” I yelled to the charge nurse as I was jumping out of my seat. I ran out the doors and turned left to the stairs, it was just down one floor. The hall was dimly lit and deserted until I reached room 305.
On entering the room- I saw the floor nurse standing by the bedside with a hopeful look on her face, and the crash cart was at the end of the bed. “How can I help”? “Mrs. Karr was having difficulty breathing, so I called her Doctor… he ordered oxygen…and we put the head of the bed up but it didn’t seem to help… she was becoming more and more cyanotic… she said she was having chest pain… so I called a code”. The floor nurse answered, with panic in her voice. Mrs. Karr was having a difficult time sitting up. The bed was at its’ highest level… she was holding onto the side rails… but she was still wheezing and gasping for air. She was trying to find that perfect spot where she would be able to breathe easier and stop the chest pains. What I noticed were her enormous eyes filled with panic and fear. It is frightening to watch someone who is looking at death.
I realized at that moment that I had met Mrs. Karr several days before this episode, I was on day shift. As a CCU nurse you are sometimes called upon to put IV lines in patients that have difficult veins. When I walked into her room I saw a middle age woman with a very pretty face, dark black curly hair and a china white complexion. She was wearing a very stylish pink night gown… no ugly hospital gown. I checked her name band and her birthday with the order sheet.
“My name is Karen Miller and I need to restart your IV line”- her left arm was wrapped in a warm towel covered with a blue pad. “I see your last IV line must have infiltrated…well… let me see your right arm”. Trying to distract her I asked “do you feel up to a few questions”?
While we talked she became more comfortable and I was able to put in her IV line.
“I just returned from California, I had been visiting my daughter and her children … oh, we had such a wonderful time. Unfortunately, while I was at my daughters’ I hit my leg; I didn’t pay it any attention until after the plane ride home. Then I noticed my right leg was swollen, warm to the touch and it seemed inflamed. It scared the hell out of me- so I went to the ER and I was admitted immediately. I was put on bed rest and Heparin… I have compresses on my right leg to help the embolism… that is what it’s called, right? I nodded yes. “Now I will only have one free limb…I hate being sick and laid up, I do wish… I could see my family”!
You have every right to be upset… it stinks to be sick and in bed. Is there any family that could come and visit? “Yes” she hesitated, “I just don’t want to bother them”.
At the end of our conversation I asked her if I could call Social Services to come and talk with her… Mary Ann is on call … she is a good friend of mine; I know she would be delighted to come, sit and talk with you. You are sick, you deserve some TLC- let us take care of you!
I was brought back to the present… looking into her eyes, so full of happiness when she was talking about her daughter and now so full of dread. She did not want to die. By then the ER doc and respiratory care personnel had arrived. Suddenly, the light left her eyes… her body slumped back into the pillows.
I got the code board out; all in one movement we lifted her up and slid the board under her back we started CPR. Respiratory care was assisting the doctor to intubate the patient.
The arms that had been fighting for life just seconds ago were lying flaccidly on the bed; her skin was ashen and covered with sweat. The entire team was working urgently. New IV lines had been started to increase her blood volume, she was connected to a portable heart monitor which showed ventricular fibrillation, someone had taken up the mantle of keeping records of the medication and procedures, and I was getting the defibrillator paddles ready to shock her heart back into rhythm.
Out in the hall I could hear the breakfast cart, the smells- coffee and bacon with eggs… another day was starting.
Mary Ann had been told of the code and she poked her head in to the room, she saw frustration and sadness on everyone’s face. Mrs. Karr… died that morning… we were told later that it was a pulmonary embolism and there was nothing we could have done.
Mary Ann asked if I wanted to get a cup of coffee after my shift was over. We met in the coffee shop. You could smell the coffee brewing, hear the chatter of dishes, …everyone getting on with their work, talking about errands they had to run and reading newspapers… life going on… the world doesn’t stop. Mary Ann told me that she did meet with Mrs. Karr, was able to contact the family… and her spirit seemed much improved. Her family had been coming and going… visiting… and recalling cherished memories. Karen you should have seen her… her eyes just lit up the room.
I sipped my coffee and closed my eyes…
