Why do some excel?

I want to start out by saying that I am happy with my Life.
I watched a show tonight and the premise was that one man paid $500,000 for another man’s life. This included everything… his name; college degrees (archeologist), anything he did, research, and the main man would just walk away and start over. This got me to thinking; you hear of people coming from nothing and making it big. Was it their ambition, luck, who they knew, money that makes one man achieve more than the guy standing right next to him. At Dad’s work a man we know well got “Employee of the Institution”, yet another example. On the show the man how took over the main man’s life took the career, friends, and relationship and ran with it. He made a huge find (archeology), had friends eating out of his hands, money, and women. The main man, who gave everything up, had spent the $500,000 dollar on bad investments and other bad ideas. So he was jealous and he killed the imposter so he could cash in again on the fame and wealth the other man had made. Just my thoughts for today.
Joe Biden came to Williamsport.

Va-va-va-voom

"Men may not even realize that red turns them on more than, say, blue, green or brown, and a woman in red may not necessarily be perceived as more likeable, kind or intelligent in the hue. But she’s definitely got more power in the va-va-va-voom department."
http://www.wowowow.com/post/want-be-sexier-try-wearing-red-131460?ap=131534 a very interesting article from Wowowow web site. I guess that is why my favorite color is red!

Lawyer's blight

http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/33422524.html will lead you to a site that gives you the inside scoop on Jenni's blight... so please check it out. Which is sad because Brian is enjoying his time at his studio. I will get more info and put it into my blog tomorrow, hopefully.
Jenni called with a late breaking WIN a 39 out of 40 and there was a ruling on having an extra person. Because cheating was reported to the people responsible at the Bar from anonymous source (Jenni) the ruling is: you will have a 2 point deduction, but there was dismay because it was not retroactive. This triva game is heating up and I will keep you up to date.

An interesting conversation

People that know Jimmy Arp will get a laugh out of this... his new girl friend is a friend of Jenna Bush yes the Jenna Bush and he is going to a Halloween Party this weekend at her house in Baltimore!

I have “my chair” in the front room and I am having problems with it so I called Keystone Furniture and they sent a man out to fix it. He arrived and on the TV in the front room CNN was on but muted. Obama was giving some kind of speech- the man fixing my chair said, “Is he your guy”? I answered, “Yes he is”. Just having a conversation of this nature is remarkable to me, not that this man could have an opinion but that he was moved to speak of it to me. He talked about how bad the economy is, I was careful not to be a pushy Democrat. He went on to say that he had voted for Bush and then did some reading about the lies we as a country were feed which lead us to the horrible state the entire country is in now. He was looking for a Republican that could fix our country… Ron Paul was a name he used. Brian said that Paul was very anti-war. I just find it interesting that we as a people in this country are coming together because the Bush Administration so screwed up this country that it crosses over party lines to fix it.

Trees of Fall (my lastest story)

Summer turns to fall, you can sense the changing of the seasons by the smell of burning leaves and a dampness caused by the autumn rains. The stunning vistas of the leaves changing color- the Maple Trees turn bright red, with the Sugar Maple you can see the yellow, orange colors and White Oak and Beech leaves turn brown. You look at the landscape and see a patch work quilt of colors made by Mother Nature for our pleasure as we are eased into the brutality of winter. As a child I woke up to what Jack Frost had painted on my windows; the picture laced with intricate patterns imprinted on glass that resemble lace and snowflakes until the sun melted them to rebuild the next frosty morning. Crisp apples used for bobbing and for making pies. A fireplace ablaze with a roaring fire, everyone wrapped in their sleeping blankets sipping hot chocolate and waiting for the stories to begin.
Momma comes in from the kitchen with her usual big hot mug of coffee, the mug was a Mother’s Day gift from my sister…it has pictures of all the kids decorating the outside.
She puts her cup down on an apple wood table beside the antique Irish rocker as she rocked back and forth, she is draped in a blanket with muted fall colors made by my Great-Great Grandmother.
“It is said back in Ireland that at midnight on Halloween night horrible things happen to children if they are not home and in bed. The tree fairies, they get very angry because this is their time to party, ooh… if any child thinks he is so brave to go out on that night to see the fairies party well they will be mighty sorry”. Ma, takes a sip of her coffee, while we wait with fretful anticipation. We snuggle closer to each other, not from the cold but with an uneasiness that comes from listening to Momma’s stories. “What happen to the children Momma?” I speak up nervously.
“The evening festivities ‘All Hallowtide- the Feast of the Dead’ always started with a meal which was followed by cake with a coin buried inside, if you got the coin you would have wealth in your future. Then after dinner you would carve your pumpkin lantern to scare away evil spirits or the girls would peel an apple- if you peeled the apple in one piece then you would drop the peel and see the initial of the man you would marry. All the children would dress in costumes to scare the devils and fairies away so they could go house to house to trick-or-treat. The fairies are always looking for children to steal away into the forest…never to be seen again. We lit bonfires to keep us safe while we all bob for apples, sing songs as someone plays mournful tunes on the violin. It can be such a merry time if you get home before midnight”. “What happens to the children that are not seen again?” I ask again with vexed concern.
“Oh, I know you would not want to be caught out after midnight but I asked my Momma the same question many years ago…and this is what she told me. A neighbor boy and his brother were determined to see a fairy on that night of Halloween, so after all the festivities and everyone had gone to bed. They slipped out of bed- put on pants and green knit sweaters their mother had made them, tip toeing past their parents and out the door. They could see the bonfire slowly dying, with only embers left. The pumpkins in the windows, still burning to keep the spirits away, as they got near the edge of town the younger brother began to have second thoughts and begged his brother to return home to their soft bed and their parents. But, the older brother pushed on, he said he could not live if he didn’t see the fairies. As they walked along the path, he spotted a bog just off the trail. There was a white mist coming up from the ground and a light, yellow in color dancing around the forest. They realized it wasn’t one light but many little lights leaping and jumping around a small campfire in the middle of a grove of Alder trees. They crept closer hiding behind the underbrush but, the earth was giving away quickly to moss and deep pockets of water. It was getting very difficult to walk, but the oldest brother continued onto the fairies. Before the youngest brother knew what was happening the older brother was dancing, skipping, jumping and flying around the camp fire. Only fairies fly, not the oldest brother, because people don’t fly. The younger brother rubbed his eyes in disbelief…fairies are just a flight of fancy, something parents told their child to keep them in line. The younger brother desperately wanted to shout out to his older brother to come back, had he forgotten that once the fairies saw him he won’t be allowed to leave…he would be lost… his brother would never come home again. The fairies had seen the oldest brother and welcomed him, giving him something to drink and eat.
As they danced you could hear the flutes and violins of the forest being played by the sounds of nature. All the sounds you hear as you walk on a windy day in the deep forest…the barn owls, the crickets, and leaves swaying make up a melodious symphony.
The oldest brother was now among the fairies, he enjoyed their ecstasy. The younger brother watches from afar afraid to move. The night emerges into dawn. He sees his older brother leaning against a tree stump falling asleep while the fairies dance around him celebrating. The youngest brother was afraid to sleep thinking that he will never see his brother again… but the dawn causes his eyes to close. Several hours pass and the morning birds song awakes him with a rush of energy… he looks over and sees his brother has been replaced by a new tree. The youngest brother jumps up to run over to where his brother once stood. “Oh Mother…Father something is wrong help… help… help…come quick”! The youngest brother ran into the village with an ashen face and out of breath, he finds his family and regales them with the story of the last eight hours.
The family walked to the grove of Alder trees, to find that there was nothing left of my flesh and blood brother, he has been replaced by an Alder tree”.
Momma continued, “This is the story passed down by our family…no other child has been lost to the fairies. They say the sign can be seen when you look at a tree with a large knot on the trunk of the tree. This is another reason why the Alder tree is known as an unlucky tree, no one likes to cut down an Alder tree because it could be someone’s child”.
My Momma stopped rocking and looked into our stunned faces. Our mouths still frozen in disbelief… she realized she had shaken us to the core.
“Now children you know this is just an Irish myth but you know the knots on some trees, well” as Momma moves close to our own faces “they are the children’s faces buried in the trunk of trees…children taken by the fairies on Halloween. You can see them watching you as you walk by!”
Poppa walks into where we are gathered and begins laughing along with Momma, we have a collective sigh of relief and scoot into the kitchen for warm cookies just out of the oven. We know that this is just one of Momma’s stories that we file away until we have our own children and want to scare the life out of them.

Liz called me today and we talked about her being trained as a lineman... she has started her virtual training. She has a controller for her computer and that is how she gets her "on the job training". That sounds real safe and in Detroit Michigan to boot.
I am sorry I missed James coming into town... so if you are reading this, I am sorry I missed you.
Dad was here for pizza on Friday... he is going to the Harmonia for dinner and a concert on Saturday. Madeline has arrived home from what she said was a wonderful trip.
Jenni had a bad week but she finds the work very rewarding. My dream of being a nurse, is hard to let go. They are regulating that we have to get CEU which I agree with but I have decided to go retired. I will save that for tomorrows post.
Brian made a wonderful area to keep his paintings... the problem is his painting are so large. I wish we had a big place to keep his work. His studio is coming along they are butting up walls.

Liz's Story

Liz wrote to me about a new on the job training she might be getting: "my job description if the AT&T union goes on strike. I was supposed to not have to do this but they changed their plans and made me a Phone splicer in Detroit, MI if their is a strike, we start training in Jan. It's just silly!!!!!"
You go Liz
Went to the foot Doc today... no burrs just some arthritis, I have to wear shoe inserts and soak my feet then go back in 3 weeks so we will see. Madeline will be coming home soon ... look forward to hearing the details... see earlier post.
Reese our neighbor torn his Achilles tendon and is in a cast up to his knee for 10 weeks... non-weight bearing so sitting in a chair for 10 weeks can you imagine. Tore it in a soccer game.

Remembering Mom"s Birthday

I am remembering Mom's birthday today. I have included a video of a 2002 birthday party for Mom at my house hope everyone can watch and enjoy.
Jenni called in the results for Trivia last nite... she passed on that a scandal has occurred within the league and she is not going to stand for it. The Dewie Decimators had nine people on the team and they have been warned that the limit is eight! So they lost last nite but the ruling is under protest. I will keep you informed.
I am going for a massage today... I know it means nothing to anyone else but I love a good massage.
I have included A VOTE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE SO REMEMBER TO VOTE!
Check out Brian's website and his lastest Video Blog at http://khingkobra.blogspot.com/

Going Golfing

Everyone watching the video should know that we did not do that to Carmel... she got into that fix herself and we did get her out of it.
I just wanted to laugh today so I brought back a favorite from my video vault.
Gary and I went looking for golf clubs at Dick's Sporting Goods... my gosh the clubs are weird. They are huge and are so light, he bought a wood, a 3 wood and an iron so he hopes to get back to playing golf. I would enjoy playing again if I could. So time will tell.

How could I not remember today

I was watching “Cold Case” and it deals with roller disco in 1978. I don’t remember roller disco being the big thing but just as I say that I thought… Liz had a severe eye injury from the roller rink accident. So maybe skating was big and I just don’t have a good memory. There are so many years that have gone by… my mind just can’t hold all the info. What is like for someone 120 years old… that is why I do blogging and keep a diary.

Sorry I forgot

Sorry I forgot to do my post on Saturday... I got very busy making brownies that ended up tasting terrible. I got so into making them that I lost track of time. Today I went to Wegmans and then called Grand-dad, after I went up to visit him. He was going to Mary Ann's house for dinner. It was a beautiful day, the leaves are at their peak. Jeff and Mary are visiting Liz and then going down to South Carolina to visit family.
Gary is going to get back into golf... which I think is a good idea.

After Talking with Jenni

Jenni and I talked on the phone last nite and I was very sad because she has a case in her office that deals with child abuse.
I know all child abuse is horrible but it just baffled me that parents who for some reason burn their child (accident or not) instead of taking the child to the ER they wait a day. First, they said in the ER that the child had gotten into medication in the mom’s purse and then gotten sick. Well the real story, as we now know it…the child was screaming because of the burn and the mother dosed the child with 50 doses of Methadone….under 2 years of age…50 doses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a controlled NARCATIC, the mother had several scripts written by different doctors but the legal department didn’t want to prosecute (I don’t judge it could be a minor problem in the scheme of things), but I thought this abuse should be attempted Murder and I know it sounds extreme but I looked up attempted murder and there are a lot of bench marks that have to be met. Here is my claim: if a mom gives a child Tylenol to relieve the pain- most parents don’t know that Tylenol is deadlier than most anything because Tylenol cannot be removed from the body- it stays in the body where Methadone has Narcan that reverses the affect and dialysis along with other remedies. I say that the parents wanted to shut the kid up and damn the consequences. We treat our child with so little regard, we need to treat children as people that have physical and emotional limitations… if the baby is crying and not stopping there is something wrong. That is my rant for today.

Maddy

Maddy has left for a cruise of a life time. She is taking the Queen Elizabeth 2 for the final trip across the Atlantic, and then flying home from England.

Brian and Gary are working on a way to store Brian's paintings in the basement. Brian has met with the people at the studio and one of the painters Michael Pilato wants to paint Brian... "The Giant". I hope to see the end result.

My lastest story

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I remember walking from school along a path to my home and there were beautiful, dainty, azure flowers that grew among the weeds, I called them wild violets. I picked them lovingly everyday when they were in bloom from early April until school was out in June. They would be a gift to my Mother. On arriving home I would wrench open the front door which was quickly followed by a thud as the door hit the back wall, loud noises in our home seemed to fade into the background. I quickly ran to Mom and pushed the flowers I had gathered into her face, she was so kind and understanding, there was no fragrance and the flower usually died within hours of my presenting them to her, but as a child I felt that I was showering her with priceless purple gemstones. What I saw in her face and in hers eyes, was love and kindness. I knew, for this short period of time, I was the center of her world. Mom would stop what she was doing and let me regale her with all the activities of my day.

Wrong Diagnosis

Brian told me about the Dali Lama… he was hospitalized in the summer thinking that he had “exhaustion”. Just recently the Dali Lama was rehospitalized … guess what… he was finally diagnosed with gallbladder disease. He had his gallbladder removed so even the Dali Lama can’t get good medical care.
"The Dalai Lama is believed to be the current incarnation of a long line of Tulkus, or Buddhist Masters, who have become exempt from the wheel of death and rebirth. These ascended masters have chosen of their own free will to be reborn to this place in order to teach humanity." So the medical community screws even a reincarnation of a God.
Another thing that happened...Gary fixed my light...that has been driving me cray for months.

We Are Penn State

I was watching the PENN STATE SHOW this morning and it had a good story, the video is as close as I could find…the man in this piece was first recuited by Miami… when he wrote and told Miami he was black they took back the scholarship. He was picked up by Penn State. The Miami story is mentioned in clip. That year they went onto the Cotton Bowl, he was the first black player to play in the Cotton Bowl. After the bowl game they called a meeting and another player said, “What are we to do about playing teams that don’t allow blacks to play on their field” and then another player said, “Well, we are Penn State”. That is what “We Are-Penn State” chant statement came from. Wally Triplett was the first black to play in the Cotton Bowl, the first black to be drafted by the NFL, and the first black NFL player to be drafted into the Korean War.

A Night Out

Sorry I missed Saturday's blog... I was resting all day so I could go out with Gary Saturday Night. We went to the Kast Hotel and met with his Frate Brothers... we had a nice time. My arm is hurting for now over and out!

A Sunny Friday

Gary had his Alumni Golf outing today...sunny for the second year in a row. We had horrendous rain in years past. He enjoyed playing golf although he needs new clubs to be competitive so maybe for Christmas. Brian had a falling out with his Psychiatrist, very, very difficult. Jenni is playing rugby up by Chicago then going down to Madison for the Penn State vs Wisconson game then going home then going back up to Chicago to play Ruby. I asked Jenni just be safe and don't wear yourself out.
I have not recovered from New York yet... I am still coming off the medication I needed to relieve the pain caused by the trip. I hope to go out tomorrow with Gary.

Sunday of our Vacation

We woke up and had breakfast at the hotel. Strangely a street fair was setup outside our hotel.... where else in the world can you stay in a hotel and have a street fair outside the front door. We drove through the city...there are lovely parks located all over the city. There is one with a waterfall that we passed going through the city. Then we headed off to see Yankee Stadium. I have included pictures of everything.

Saturday

On Saturday of our vacation we got up and got all day passes for the subway only $7.50, then up to Balthazar's Restaurant for their famous French Toast (featured on Martha Stewart)... I have put pictures on the web site. Then we went to the Tenement museum, the Reuben Museum, Madison Park that had tree house instillation, and a lot of other places just walking around. This damn old laptop will not upload my pictures so I am trying to put them on the display to the left of this post otherwise I will post when I get my new computer fixed. Oh I forgot Liz was rear ended in her car... lots of damage to car but Liz is okay. Jenni is busy working on first trial in awhile... good luck Jenni. Gary has been very busy getting ready for the Homecoming weekend and the golf tournment... which is being named in Tom Croyles name. Gary is going to play... wish him luck! Jenni came in 3rd but beat the Dewey Decimators so it is ok.

Our First Day

My damn computer is in the shop so I am using my old laptop and it goes very, very slow! I love to blog so this is driving me crazy. Well, I will start off my blog with last Friday, the first day of our anniversary celebration. Gary and I talked about celebrating our anniversary, the first 5 years we went away in the fall it is our favorite time of year. After Jenni was born we never went out of town, which was ok, but I do miss our trips. Last year we went to Oregon in September, this year will be the first time in over 30 years that we will have gone away on our anniversary. Our first day was punctuated by a “police action” which delayed us for 2 1/2 hours. We entered the Lincoln Tunnel at 5 and got out at 7:30. The Police action involved a bottle of Snappel at the entrance of one of the tunnels, we had room service and stayed in. The hotel was lovely.

Brian moves in

Brian moves into his new studio... you can see it on the video... there is music to this video. He is in this temporary space until December.
